After becoming aware of information circulating online regarding the disappearance of Brian Shaffer, we reviewed the claims being discussed in an effort to clarify what is currently known and to address public questions responsibly.
In 2006, during a polygraph examination involving Meredith Reed, she was reportedly asked whether she had knowledge of anyone who may have harmed Brian Shaffer or who may have had information regarding his disappearance. According to information available to us, Meredith Reed identified one individual by name: Doug Barry.
Also in 2006, the Columbus Police Department received a separate tip from a woman who expressed concerns that her co-worker could have been involved in Brian Shaffer’s disappearance. This information later became commonly referred to as the “Pearl Alley Tip.” The individual identified in that tip was also Doug Barry.
In 2020, investigators with the Columbus Police Department conducted a search of a former residence in connection with the ongoing investigation into Brian Shaffer’s disappearance. Records indicate that the former resident of that property was Doug Barry.
We have further confirmed that Doug Barry was interviewed by investigators at least once during the course of the investigation.
This information has become the subject of public discussion online, and because multiple references to the same individual appear within separate aspects of the investigation, we believe it is appropriate to address the matter factually and without speculation.
