Earth Day Every Day: 30 Family-Friendly ways to protect Mother Earth

Earth Day is April 22, but it’s important for us to take care of our planet every day. If you’ve been thinking about finding significant ways to help your children learn to care for the environment, we’ve got 30 ideas, one for each day in April to help your family take action. From building a sense of wonder for nature, to conserving our precious resources to helping older kids to find ways to become activists, you’ll find an array of activities to suit your family.

1. Go for a butterfly walk in your neighborhood or a local garden. Afterwards, plant pollinator-friendly native plants.

2. Recycle food scraps. Proper food waste disposal is powerful. Did you know...Food and yard waste in landfills rots without oxygen, emitting methane, the second greatest contributor to climate change.

What the World Needs (is You)

I think no matter who you are, what you do for a living or where you’re reading this from—if you exist in the world right now and do not live under a rock—you can agree that the world is a heavy place lately.
We see the news in headlines while we’re brewing our morning coffee, little sleepy heads slowly yawning out of bed and into the kitchen to ask what’s for breakfast, and we feel the weight of it in our chests but smile anyway and say, “Good morning.”
We hear the people in the checkout line talking about potential bombs and new wars and the weight of it all makes their little hands holding ours seem so small and light, and we whisper to them, “Pizza tonight?”

When Friendships Get Off Track:
Guiding Your Child Toward Healthy Relationships

When thinking about your child making friends, most parents hope they’ll connect with peers who are well-adjusted, kind-hearted and making positive choices. But what happens when that doesn’t quite go as expected? What do you do when your child starts spending time with the “wrong crowd”?
This is something that comes up often in clinic—parents feeling unsure about how to respond when their child forms friendships that don’t seem like a good fit. Sometimes, children are even brought in for behavioral concerns, leaving parents wondering: Is this who my child is, or are they being shaped by the company they keep?

Sleepaway Summer Camp 101

Summer camp is without a doubt something kids look forward to all year. Nevertheless, there are important issues you should address to ensure that your kids have a really great time at camp. Based on my experiences as a parent of seasoned summer campers as well as conversations with other parents, I’ve pulled together a list of some of the most common issues.

Allergies
If your kids suffer from seasonal allergies, like grass or tree pollen, tell the camp physician or nurse and pack all the medication they need. It can be a real drag for them to walk around the whole time with a runny nose or watery eyes. If they suffer from more serious allergies, like animal or food allergies, inform the camp that your kids shouldn’t come into contact with those allergens. Our son is very allergic to horses. We didn’t think anything of it before we realized that his camp has alpacas, which can induce the same allergic reaction as horses.

Replacing Fear with Facts
DSAGC PLANS EVENTS IN CELEBRATION OF WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY

It’s all about the socks. The crazier the better. March 21 marks World Down Syndrome Day. The celebration, commonly referred to simply as “3.21 Day,” is symbolic because people with Down syndrome have three copies of
the 21st chromosome. Trisomy 21 is the clinical term for Down syndrome, which is the third copy on the 21st chromosome. People with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome, giving them 47, instead of 46.
On March 21, people around the world wear brightly colored, mismatched socks. Socks were chosen because the karyotype of Down syndrome chromosomes actually look like mismatched socks.

The Bond That Shapes Us: What Attachment Theory Teaches Parents

How do we, as parents, know we’re doing the right thing? How do we know if our child will turn out “okay?” Will our child feel a sense of belonging in our family and in our community? Will they stray from what we’ve taught them, or remember the principles we tried to instill? Parents have asked these questions across generations. Some discover answers that make sense to them; others continue learning as they go. There are well-established theories behind attachment styles, and what these theories tell us can be deeply influential in our ongoing parenting journey.

Attachment starts early — even before birth. A baby can hear their mother’s voice around 18–20 weeks of gestation, and immediately after birth, a newborn can recognize their mother’s scent. These early sensory experiences help lay the foundation for bonding and attachment. In this article, I will introduce key attachment theorists and break down what their work has revealed about how we guide caregivers to parent today. Having this framework allows us to approach our children with the love, compassion and care they deserve.

Success in School: Five Ways to Build Your Child’s Critical Thinking Skills

Everyday life involves a lot of problem-solving. How do you encourage your children to get along with others? What’s the best way to help your child learn to manage money? Should you let your kids play video games and which ones are off-limits?
Without realizing it, you’re making logical decisions every day, and your kids need to learn how to make sound, logical decisions as well. Not just in their social and emotional lives, but in their reading, their writing, and their math and science explorations as well.
In short, the child who knows how to think logically will be a better student who comprehends his or her reading at a higher level, is able to think creatively to solve math and science problems, can communicate clearly and may even score higher on IQ tests
