Chris Whitney and Annalisa Ventola met at the Ohio State University School of Music in 1996 and married 13 years later, sharing both their personal and professional lives together. Between a full schedule of students, ensemble rehearsals, performance workshops, a part-time art gallery, and a small recording studio that has produced several demos, albums, EP’s, and a film score, Whitney and Ventola

Music Studios serves a diverse clientele. Having taught music for over 15 years, they have seen their students go on to study music in conservatories, entertain dignitaries (including President Obama!), teach others, and start musical projects of their own.

Our family of instruments at the studio has greatly expanded. For years, Annalisa has collaborated with a family of luthiers in Thessaloniki, Greece, copyediting their publications as they build a contemporary culture of practice around the ancient lyre. This week we received two new lyres from Luthieros Music Instruments - Οργανοποιία "Αναστάσιος" to participate in this culture.

Cultivating a "student mind" can occasionally enhance one's musical practice, even as a professional musician. This fall, we'll become students again as we learn these new instruments, and it's going to be fun!

Quite some years ago, I decided, for no particular reason, to write a collection of quartets for classical guitar. With no plan for having them performed, I wrote them thinking, "Maybe someday." Well, that day is soon approaching.

On Sunday, March 17th, at 3 p.m., at Capitol University's Huntington Hall, the Columbus Guitar Society Members’ Ensemble, under the direction of Waverly Wilkerson, will perform my Quartet "Elven Newscast." The concert will also feature solo and duet performances from many ensemble members (including myself).

As if that's not enough, on Sunday, March 24th, at 2 p.m. at the Upper Arlington Public Library Tremont Rd, Karl Wohlwend's student recital performance will feature another of my quartets, "Water Bug Totem," along with solos and duets from Karl's students (including myself). Both concerts are open to the public.

With great thanks to Karl and Wave's enthusiasm, I'm excited to see this come together!

It’s back-to-school time! New clothes, new books, new classes—lots of new assignments and maybe new teachers and new friends too—football, track, theater, “In The Know” team, science club… With a new workload and endless possibilities, it might seem impossible to find the time for guitar or piano lessons, let alone the time for daily practice.

It’s time to prioritize. Just because you can’t get an hour a day to practice doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bother! Schedule a time every day that is your practice time, even if it’s only 15 minutes. Make it part of your daily routine. Like brushing your teeth or walking the dog, it’s just part of your day.

At Whitney and Ventola Music Studios, we make every effort to be as flexible and accommodating as we can. We understand that your team needs you, or that the play can’t go on without you. Given enough notice, we are usually able to find lesson times that fit even the most demanding extracurricular schedule.

Don’t put music on the back burner; keep it up. We know you can!
