🌿 5 Mistakes I Made Growing Anthuriums 👀

If I had to start my Anthurium collection all over again, there are definitely a few things I would do differently.

After years of growing Anthuriums, experimenting with different setups, making plenty of mistakes 😂, and figuring out what actually works in my space, I put together the 5 biggest things I would change if I were starting from scratch.

And honestly, some of them probably would have saved me a LOT of frustration… and money. 😭

🌿 If you’ve given up on Alocasias, don’t count them out just yet.

I killed this genus more than once before everything finally clicked. Looking back, I wasn’t growing them wrong. I just hadn’t found the system that worked for me.

Here are a few things that made the biggest difference:

🌱 Be patient. Dropped leaves don’t always mean a dead plant. If the roots are healthy, keep caring for it.

🪴 Use the substrate you’re most confident with. I had success in semi-hydro, but my plants thrive because I understand my coco-based mix best.

🍄 Add mycorrhizae when repotting. I use it every time to support healthy roots and help reduce transplant stress.

🌿 Protect the roots. Repot with damp roots and disturb them as little as possible.

💧 Try self-watering pots. I let the reservoir empty, wait about a day, then refill it. It’s become one of my favorite ways to grow Alocasias.

Plant care isn’t about finding the “perfect” method. It’s about finding the one that makes sense in your home.

🌿 Plant of the Week: Alocasia Frydek Variegata

Some plants earn their place in your heart.

This Alocasia Frydek Variegata is one of them.

Ironically, I killed this plant three times before I finally figured it out. 😂 And back then, that was a much more expensive lesson than it would be today.

Now she’s one of the easiest plants in my collection and a reminder that sometimes the plants we struggle with the most become our favorites.

The contrast between those velvety dark green leaves and bright variegation never gets old. She doesn’t need to be the rarest plant in the room to steal the show.

💡 Lighting: 14 hours daily under Barrina grow lights
🪴 Growing Medium: Aerated coco-based soil mix in a self-watering pot
💧 Watering: Self-watering setup keeps moisture consistent
🏡 Environment: Grown exclusively under artificial lighting in ambient household humidity
✨ Fertilizer: Foliage Focus at every watering

Sometimes all it takes is failing a few times before a plant finally clicks. I’m glad I kept giving this one another chance.

One of the questions I get asked the most is why I organize my nearly 300 houseplants by genus.

For me, it isn’t about making the room look perfect. It actually makes caring for such a large collection much easier. Similar plants are grouped together, I can compare growth side by side, and I always know where to find what I’m looking for.

It may not be everyone’s system, but it works really well for me. 😊

🌿 Plant of the Week 🌿

Meet one of the quiet stars of my collection, my Alocasia gageana Aurea Variegata. 💚

I bought this plant from a local grower in Columbus in December 2024. When I moved to Cleveland in fall 2025, it handled the transition like a champ and has been sizing up ever since. It’s one of those plants I don’t talk about enough because it’s so easygoing, but every new leaf reminds me why I love it.

Here’s how I grow mine:

🪴 Pot: 9-inch clear nursery pot
🌱 Substrate: Chunky, well-aerated coco-based mix
💧 Watering: About every 12 days
🌿 Fertilizer: Foliage Pro with every watering
🍄 Repotting: Mycorrhizae at every repot
💡 Lighting: 14 hours under a 2-foot grow light
🏡 Environment: Grown exclusively under artificial light in ambient humidity around 35–40% in winter and 60–75% in spring and summer.
