April is , and to kick off our series, we want to highlight companies focused on sustainability and giving back to the environment. Our first company is Patagonia, an American retailer of outdoor clothing, founded in 1973. Although the company is known for their global market and quality clothing, Patagonia’s noteworthy quality is their fight against the climate crisis.
Patagonia has implemented a self-tax of 1% of their profits to provide support to environmental nonprofits defending air, land, and water worldwide. They work to connect consumers with Patagonia grantees in order to tackle the climate crisis the world is facing today. They help to expose people to events, petitions, volunteer work, and other opportunities to better the environment.
In 2016, Patagonia donated 100% of sales made on Black Friday, totaling $10 million, towards environmental organizations. In 2018, Patagonia received a tax cut (part of the tax cut plan for groups committing to protect air, land and water and helping to find solutions to the climate crisis) and then donated that $10 million right back into climate change awareness. Patagonia also gives grants to organizations that help identify the root causes of environmental problems and approach issues with a commitment to long-term change. Patagonia sets a great example of how to use one’s business, voice, and community to help better the world and climate. Like they say, “Don’t give in, give back.” Learn more about their activism here: https://www.patagonia.com/activism/
