We are all gonna die eventually but it's sad how much damage humans do to the planet shortening the lives of people and every other living creature on this earth. This could be one of the most devastating things ever. I think they need to build a bigger stronger structure around it.
A radioactive “tomb” in the Pacific is leaking.
On Runit Island in the Marshall Islands, a concrete dome covers a crater left behind by a U.S. nuclear test in 1958.
The test, known as Cactus, released an 18-kiloton nuclear blast and left a large crater behind. Decades later, the U.S. military filled that crater with contaminated soil and debris from nuclear testing across Enewetak Atoll.
Then workers sealed it with concrete.
The result became known as the Runit Dome, or “The Tomb.”
It is about 377 feet (115 meters) wide and contains more than 120,000 tons of radioactive material, including plutonium-contaminated waste.
The problem is that the dome was never designed as a permanent solution.
It was built in the late 1970s as part of a cleanup effort, but the crater beneath it was not fully lined. The island itself sits on porous coral sediment, which allows groundwater and seawater to move through the area.
Scientists say that groundwater has already entered the site. So far, experts have described the radioactive leakage into the Pacific as relatively small. But the bigger concern is what happens over time.
Runit Island sits only about 6.5 feet (2 meters) above sea level.
As seas rise, storm surges, high tides and coastal flooding could push more water through the dome and the contaminated material beneath it. Climate scientists have warned that the Marshall Islands could face about 3.3 feet (1 meter) of sea level rise by 2100.
That would put even more pressure on a structure already showing cracks.
The waste inside includes plutonium-239, a radioactive isotope used in nuclear weapons that remains dangerous for more than 24,000 years.
Researchers have also found elevated radiation levels and radionuclides in soil samples from Runit Island outside the dome. That contamination could come from leakage, older fallout, or waste dumped during the original cleanup.
