📬 If You’ve Moved in 2025 — Read This Before Tax Season!
Every year, I see people stressed and stuck waiting on their W-2s, IRS letters, or IP PINs because they forgot one simple step…
👉🏽 updating their address.
It might not seem like a big deal, but if your mail is still going to your old address, you could face major delays when it’s time to file.
💡 Why You Need to Update Your Address with the IRS
📨 Tax Refunds: Wrong or outdated addresses can delay your refund or cause you to miss balance-due notices.
📑 IRS Notices: Most IRS communication still comes by mail — missing a letter can mean missed deadlines or penalties.
🗂️ Accurate Records: Keeping your info current protects your tax history and prevents mismatched records.
🏠 How to Update Your Address with the IRS
There are a few simple ways to make sure the IRS has your correct address:
1️⃣ Call the IRS
You can call directly and request an address update.
📞 Be ready to verify your identity — they’ll ask for your SSN, old address, and new address.
2️⃣ Mail Form 8822 or 8822-B
• Individuals: Form 8822
• Businesses: Form 8822-B
✉️ Mail it to the IRS address listed in the instructions (it varies by state).
📮 Don’t Forget the Postal Service!
The IRS does NOT get automatic updates from USPS — you must update both.
Here’s how to update your address with USPS:
1️⃣ Go to www.usps.com/move
2️⃣ Fill out the Change of Address (COA) form online — takes just a few minutes
3️⃣ Or visit your local post office and complete the paper form in person
Once done, USPS will forward your mail for up to 12 months, giving you time to update all your accounts safely.
⏳ Don’t wait!
A quick address update now can save you weeks of frustration later.
