There are a couple of people in my life who almost always greet me with, âHow are you?â
And honestly? Sometimes it feels like they don't really want to know. It's just what they say. And I usually give the equally automatic response: âGood. How are you?â
Conversation accomplished. Except we haven't really learned anything about each other.
What if we replaced âHow are you?â once in a while with a question that shows a little more curiosity?
âWhat are you looking forward to today?â
âWhatâs been the best part of your week?â
âWhatâs something good happening in your life right now?â
âAnything fun going on lately?â
And if someone asks **you** âHow are you?ââgive them something more than âgood.â
âIâm good. Iâm really looking forward to ___.â
âIâve actually had a pretty interesting weekâŚâ
âIâm a little overwhelmed today, but something good happenedâŚâ
Give them a thread they can pick up and continue.
Because a good conversation doesn't always need a brilliant opening. Sometimes one person just has to give the other person something real to respond to.
Be interested. And give people a chance to be interested in you.
