I went to elementary school with the kid of Wild Oats Bakery owner, and our class even visited the bakery on a field trip back in the 90s! I distinctly remember the WHIRRING of the GINORMOUS stand mixer making batter as Becky Shepherd (Wild Oats' owner) YELLED over it to explain how the bakery operated every day! And I fell in love. When Barrie Rose and I got engaged, and they visited Maine for the first time, I said "WE HAVE TO GO TO WILD OATS!" Always the first stop.

I am so pleased to announce that this week, Becky Shepherd, was named one of Mainebiz's 2026 Outstanding Women in Business!

When asked: "How do you manage the higher cost of everything, from labor to vendors to food supplies?" she replied, "labor is our biggest expense and the one I don’t touch. When our costs go up, so does my staff’s cost of living and their chances of building their future. I believe people deserve a living wage, and I would rather run a tighter business than have a cheaper payroll."
