Before we ever roll cameras… we find the truth of the scene. 🎬
This is one of my favorite parts of directing — sitting with my actors, walking through the scene, and discovering what feels honest.
For me, blocking isn’t just about where someone stands or moves. It’s about asking: What is happening emotionally? Why does this moment matter?
We’ll run the scene, feel it out, make adjustments, and run it again. Once everyone feels connected and the moment feels real… then we shoot.
Preparation like this is also what helps us move quickly. When the actors understand the heart of the scene and the crew knows the plan, we can often capture what we need in just a few takes (and sometimes that first take has the magic ✨).
But we always grab one more… because editors appreciate options. 😉
This scene between Hannah and Derek was such an important one, two people carrying history, hurt, and things left unsaid. Watching Marisa and David find those layers was exactly why I love what I do.
