Thirteen years. That is how long it has been since Ford sold a factory high-performance Mustang convertible.

The last one was the Shelby GT500, and it ended after the 2014 model year. Since then, if you wanted open air and real power, you were doing it yourself.

Meet the Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible. 795 horsepower and 660 lb-ft from a supercharged 5.2-liter V8, backed by a seven-speed dual clutch. That is 133 more horsepower than the GT500 convertible it replaces at the top of the open-air food chain.

What makes it interesting is that Ford Racing did not just cut the roof off a Dark Horse SC coupe. It starts from the GT convertible architecture, adds the coupe's magnesium tower-to-tower brace for rigidity, and runs its own springs, stabilizer bars, and MagneRide calibration. The coupe's Gurney flap is gone and the hood vent is different, both in the name of getting the convertible's aero balance right.

The goal was not lap times. It was the ultimate top-down grand touring Mustang.

Orders open Fall 2026. They will land in showrooms Spring 2027.

Would you take this over the coupe?

Two Mustangs. One end of an era.

This white hatchback and red convertible were the last Fox Body Mustangs to roll off the line in 1993, closing out a generation that ran from 1979 all the way through 1993. Fourteen years of Mustangs that defined an entire era of enthusiasts.

And they came out of Dearborn Assembly, the plant celebrating 75 years of building Mustangs.

Everybody thinks “5.0” started with the Fox Body. It didn’t.

The first Mustang to ever wear those three characters was the 1978 Mustang II King Cobra. That rear-facing hood scoop carried a 5.0 badge, and it was the only Mustang II where the V8 was mandatory instead of optional.

Why metric? Pontiac was slapping “6.6 LITRE” on Trans Am shaker scoops, and Ford wanted in on the same fight. Never mind that the 302 is really about 4.9 liters. 5.0 just looked better on a hood.

The horsepower was not the story. Under 140 hp in a car built during the worst of the emissions era. But the badge stuck.

It carried into the 1979 Cobra, disappeared in 1980 and 1981 when the 255 replaced the 302, then came roaring back on the 1982 GT and ran all the way to 1993. Fifteen years later, “5.0” was one of the most recognized badges in American performance.

All of it traces back to a Mustang II.

Does the King Cobra get enough respect? Tell us below.
