Health District has confirmed parasites in the Columbia River are causing cases of “swimmer’s itch” BFHD states simple precautions can prevent the pesky rash.

🚤💦 Heading out for boat races or summer fun on the Columbia this upcoming weekend? Watch out for swimmer’s itch! It’s a pesky rash caused by a microscopic parasite in the water—but with a few simple precautions, you can help protect yourself:

🌀 Avoid swimming near marshy shorelines where snails live
🧴 Apply waterproof sunscreen before jumping in
🦢 Don’t feed birds near the water (they’re part of the parasite cycle)
🚿 Dry off or shower right after swimming

Good News! Swimmer's itch is not contagious and does not spread from person to person. Enjoy the river—just stay safe and informed!
