What if you're not burned out?

What if you're bored?

There's a difference.

Burnout says, "I have nothing left."

Boredom says, "I don't care anymore."

And sometimes what looks like a motivation problem is actually an environment problem, a challenge problem or a purpose problem.

Before you start looking for another vacation, maybe it's worth asking a different question.

What exactly are you tired of?

I explored the difference between burnout and boredom in the latest Brace 4 Impact.

Edition 5: The wellness industry has sold you a very convenient diagnosis for a very inconvenient truth. You don’t need rest. You need a bigger problem.

Nobody puts "having uncomfortable conversations" on their list of favorite leadership activities.

But avoiding them doesn't make them disappear.

It makes them more expensive.

The performance problem gets worse.

The relationship deteriorates.

The resentment grows.

And eventually, the conversation you avoided becomes the conversation you absolutely have to have.

I wrote about the art of having difficult conversations before they become impossible ones.

Pressure reveals people.

But elite performers have learned something important: you don't always control the pressure, but you can control what happens next.

Sometimes the difference between a great decision and a terrible one is three seconds.

Three seconds to breathe.

Three seconds to reset.

Three seconds to choose a response instead of reacting.

I wrote about the 3-second rule and what elite performers understand about operating under pressure.

Edition 11: The difference between the person who folds under pressure and the person who doesn’t is not talent, experience, or a better morning routine. It is three seconds and the discipline to use them correctly.

Being smart can get you promoted.

It doesn't necessarily make you a good leader.

Some of the smartest people I've encountered have struggled terribly with leadership because they assumed intelligence was transferable.

It isn't.

Knowing the answer isn't the same as getting people to follow you toward it.

I wrote about why smart people sometimes become surprisingly bad leaders.

Edition 12: Ego dressed up as intellect is the most dangerous person in any room. And the terrifying part is they have a really compelling explanation for why you’re wrong.

Desperation Doesn't Sell

One of the fastest ways to lose a sale is to make the customer feel like you desperately need the sale.

Desperation changes the conversation.

It changes your negotiating position.

And most importantly, customers can smell it.

The strongest sellers aren't trying to convince everyone.

They're trying to determine whether there's actually a fit.

I wrote about why confidence closes more business than desperation ever will.

Edition 13: The prospect can smell it. They cannot tell you exactly what it is, but they know something is wrong the moment you walk in.

It's easy to have values when everything is going well.

The real test comes when the quarterly numbers are terrible.

When a big customer threatens to leave.

When your best employee violates the rules.

When doing the right thing is going to cost real money.

That's when corporate values stop being words and start becoming decisions.

I wrote about why company values often collapse precisely when they're needed most.

Edition 14: When pressure mounts, the values are the first to be ignored

Want to know a lot about someone's future?

Look at the people they spend their time with.

You need people who challenge you.

People who tell you the truth.

People who open doors.

People who have your back.

And people who aren't impressed by your title.

Your inner circle may be one of the most important career decisions you never formally make.

I wrote about the five people I think everyone needs in theirs.

Here's a dangerous organizational environment:

A place where everyone is afraid to be wrong.

People stop experimenting.

They stop challenging assumptions.

They stop raising uncomfortable questions.

And eventually, they stop telling the truth.

The healthiest organizations aren't those where nobody makes mistakes.

They're the ones where people can admit them before they become disasters.

I wrote about what happens when being wrong becomes more dangerous than being silent.
