What a wonderful MEMORY! Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site – North Dakota

Along the banks of the Missouri and Knife Rivers lies a place where history still whispers through the prairie grass. 🌾

Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site preserves the ancestral earthlodge villages of the Hidatsa, Mandan, and Arikara peoples—thriving trading communities that once connected tribes from the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains. These villages were centers of agriculture, culture, and commerce long before North Dakota was a state.

Walking the trails today, you’re standing where families lived, stories were shared, and traditions were passed down for generations. It’s quiet, powerful, and deeply grounding—one of those places that makes you slow down and listen.

Gear testing and spending time with my love and amazing people! Headed out on the Sylamore Trail in AR to test out some s gear.

My wife is carrying our new Northrim from that we really love right out of the package. She says it quite possibly is the most comfortable pack she’s ever worn.

I am testing for the second trip Rugged Long Haul 50L from .wilderness.designs and a f***y pack I made for myself ( ) that matches the pack.

We also have the new Ultamid 1 from that we are so excited about. This is the first trip with it.

Luke from has his new Mid1 1 person tent from that we can’t wait to check out.

Love the couscous and the spicy spam. Also the Ramen is edible. I know it’s taking all the fun out of cooking but going ultralight is fun and doing without is even funner. Kinda.

The BOT makes it so much easier. I don’t have to carry plastic PB jar. Plus if we have a fire I can use that to heat things up. Perfect.

Elite journal makers wanted almost $300 for a full sized leather journal cover and 3 inserts. No way BRO. So I decided to make my own. Pulled out some extra leather (high grain) black out of the archives and waited on the inserts from Amazon.

Inserts came in. Measured, cut and fit perfectly. Took some elastic band from my backpacking gear and fixed the inserts. Cut grommets in each end for the elastic band. Removed and punched holes for sewing. Sewing does nothing in this project other than for beautification.

Hand sewed the edges. Exactly what I wanted for a small fraction of the price/cost plus it’s made by me with added beauty and personalization.

It was fun bringing back the BROfessor Leather style from years gone by and resurrecting those gifts. But this was pretty special. Not the Ultralight as I have been doing lately, but this is a lifelong treasure I love.

First time for us trying out our new Ultamid 2 with full insert.

It was so easy for us to setup. That part I absolutely love. The hard part is finding a spot (when you have to stealth camp) big enough for the mansion that it creates.

I wish it had a vestibule as it was raining and I didn’t want all the nasty wet gear inside the tent with me. But I do love all the room we had and that when it is fully unzipped, you can stand up and walk out and in. That’s nice.

We shall have many more amazing nights in this!

Bros. We are doing it again next weekend. Cant wait!
