Alissia Matthews plucked okra from her plants, dropping them into a basket hanging from the crook of her arm.The green fingers joined a jumble of rattlesnake beans at the bottom of the woven basket.
Like many crops grown at Matthews’ farm, okra is a staple in Gullah-Geechee culture.
Matthews owns Kidogo Farms with her husband, Monte. Kidogo is a Swahili word for "a little," and it reflects the idea that farming can be done on a small scale.
"It don’t take a lot to make a lot," Matthews explained.
