Let's talk about that curl chart. The 4C, the 3B, the whole numbering system. No disrespect to the man who made it, but I've never liked it. 🤍
After 15+ years behind the chair, here's what I know: your client's curl number doesn't tell you how to care for their hair. It doesn't tell you the porosity, the density, or whether the hair is fine, coarse, damaged, or healthy. Those are the things that decide which products to use, not a number. And one head can have five different curl patterns anyway.
Read the porosity. Read the density. Read the actual hair.
That chart is man made. But the coils coming out of your head were made by the Father, and no man could ever capture all of that in one little chart. 🤍

The perfect silk press is created in the shampoo bowl, not with the flat iron. 👀
One of the many things they didn't teach us in hair school: true silk comes from your prep. Detoxing the buildup, a deep moisturizing shampoo, and a rich conditioning treatment. Before a hot tool ever touches the hair strands, properly cleansed and hydrated hair should already look smooth, shiny and SILKY after the blow dry.
The flat iron only seals in what you built at the bowl. 🤍

Stop reaching for 40 volume just to lift faster. 👀
One of the many things they didn't teach us in hair school: it's not about the time, it's about the cuticle.
Yes, a higher volume lifts more. But it does it by blasting the cuticle wide open and ripping through the hair. That's not a shortcut, that's damage.
A lower volume opens the cuticle gently and pulls the pigment out in a controlled way. That's how you lift and keep the hair healthy.
Lower and slower is always better. 🤍

If smoke is filling the salon while you're blow drying... we have a problem.
And it's not your dryer. 👀
One of the many things they didn't teach us in hair school: smoke means there's still PRODUCT on the hair. Either you didn't rinse the conditioner thoroughly, you didn't cleanse correctly and there's buildup, or you used too much leave-in.
Clean, properly prepped hair does not smoke. Go back to the bowl and do it right. 🤍

That facial steamer at the shampoo bowl? It's not doing what you think. 👀
One of the many things they didn't teach us in hair school: the correct steps for hydrating textured hair.
That's a facial steamer, made for skin, not hair. And scattered steam penetrates nothing.

But the bigger problem: you can't cleanse and hydrate at the same time. At the bowl you're cleaning the cuticle OUT. Cleanse first, then hydrate separately so the moisture goes IN.
One thing at a time. 🤍

One of the many things they didn’t teach us in hair school: your chair is a place of trust, not a group chat.
If you gossip to your client about your other clients, she already knows you’ll be gossiping about her the moment she leaves. What’s said in your chair should stay in your chair.
That’s not just manners. That’s professionalism.
