My Romanian road trip is coming to an end after 4 weeks travelling all over this underated, undiscovered gem of a country.

I visited Bucharest, Brasov, Iasi, Suceava, Cluj, Sighisoara, Sibiu, and Timisoara, with short stops in several places in between.

Beautiful, clean and safe. Amazing cities and towns, gorgeous countryside, great roads, friendly people, great food, and no crowds. Loved it! 🇷🇴 🙂

What makes Essaouira special isn't just its history—it's the blend of cultural influences, the artsy vibe, and the music that fills the air, especially during the annual Gnaoua Music Festival. The town is a haven for artists and musicians, drawn by its bohemian atmosphere and picturesque streets.

Ait Benhaddou is a ksar, or fortified citadel, built over 1000 years ago as a caravan stop on the route from Timbuktu to Marrakech, and it is still inhabited by Berber families that have lived here for generations.

Constructed primarily from clay mixed with straw, it consists of houses and kasbahs (a house with four towers) stacked upon each other within protective walls.

It has served as a backdrop for many films and series, such as "Lawrence of Arabia," "The Mummy," "Prince of Persia," and "Game of Thrones."

The citadel lacks electricity (most homes and hotels use solar panels), and until a few years ago, it had no water supply, requiring residents to walk about 5 km to a spring since the river it sits upon is salty due to passing through a salt mine.

Although most of its inhabitants have moved to modern dwellings on the other side of the river, Ait Benhaddou stands as a testament to the traditional lifestyle and building techniques of southern Morocco and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site 🇲🇦

This is Volubilis, the ancient heart of Roman Morocco!

Founded in the 3rd century B.C. and reaching its height during the 1st to 3rd centuries A.D., Volubilis served as a critical Roman administrative center and was famed for its olive oil production.

The ruins here are astonishingly detailed. The mosaic floors tell colorful stories of Roman deities and daily life, while the remnants of the basilica and the triumphal arch stand as a testament to the grandeur of Roman architecture.
