Posted • Yesterday, Congresswoman Carrie Meek passed away at the age of 95.

After serving as Miami-Dade College's first Black professor, associate dean and assistant to the vice president, After serving for the Florida state House, Carrie Meek became the first Black woman elected to the Florida Senate in 1982. In 1992, she then became the first Black member of Congress from Florida since the Reconstruction.
