🚨 Important Safety Message from Laurel County Fire Department 🚨
Subject: Generator Safety Following Tornado Damage
In the wake of the recent tornado, many in our community are relying on portable generators to power their homes and essential devices. While these tools can be life-savers, improper use can lead to serious injury or death.
The Laurel County Fire Department urges all residents using generators to follow these critical safety tips:
🔌 Never use generators indoors
Generators should always be placed outside and away from windows, doors, and vents. Carbon monoxide (CO) gas is odorless, invisible, and deadly. Just a few minutes of exposure in an enclosed space can be fatal.
🌬️ Keep generators well-ventilated
Ensure the generator is at least 20 feet away from your home or structure with the exhaust pointing away from living areas.
🔥 Avoid fire hazards
Fuel for generators is highly flammable.
• Turn off the generator and let it cool before refueling.
• Store fuel in approved containers and away from heat sources.
• Never smoke near the generator or fuel.
🔌 Prevent electrical backfeed
Plug appliances directly into the generator or use a heavy-duty outdoor-rated extension cord. Do not plug the generator into a wall outlet—this can cause deadly backfeed and endanger utility workers.
🧯 Have a working carbon monoxide detector
If you’re using a generator nearby, make sure your home has a battery-powered or battery-backup CO detector.
Our department is working hard to support recovery efforts, but your safety is our top priority. If you have questions or need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out.
