TIFTON, Ga. – PCOM (Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine) South Georgia graduated its third class to receive the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and its fourth class to receive the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences during Commencement on May 15 at the University of Georgia Conference Center in Tifton.
In addressing the 54 graduates and their friends and family, Jay S. Feldstein, DO ’81, PCOM president and CEO, emphasized how important it will be for graduates to remember their professional purpose.
“Graduates, you chose this path because you believe in something greater than yourself – the power of medicine, the promise of science, and the responsibility of care,” he said. “You have devoted yourselves to healing, discovery, and advocacy. You are grounded in empathy, integrity, and a holistic approach to health.”
Joseph Anthony Giaimo, DO, FCCP, MACOI, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, presented the Commencement address. A 1987 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Giaimo also received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Dr. Feldstein during the event.
In addressing the graduates, Dr. Giaimo shared the positive side of what awaits them in their professional roles. He encouraged them to collaborate with their colleagues, get enough sleep, and find a hobby that will help them refresh.
“Bottom line: there’s no greater or more honorable way to spend your professional career than caring for others,” he said. “There’s no greater time to be a doctor of osteopathic medicine. And here’s the best news – patients are craving what you’ve been trained to do.”
Dr. Giamo continued by emphasizing the unique skill set DOs have.
“You leave here today not just as doctors,” he said. “You leave here as DOs. You have extra training, knowledge and understanding, not only to help your patients. Your job is to keep them well. May God bless each and every one of you. Now, go take care of the world!”
