TIFTON, Ga. – PCOM (Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine) South Georgia graduated its third class to receive the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and its fourth class to receive the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences during Commencement on May 15 at the University of Georgia Conference Center in Tifton.

In addressing the 54 graduates and their friends and family, Jay S. Feldstein, DO ’81, PCOM president and CEO, emphasized how important it will be for graduates to remember their professional purpose.

“Graduates, you chose this path because you believe in something greater than yourself – the power of medicine, the promise of science, and the responsibility of care,” he said. “You have devoted yourselves to healing, discovery, and advocacy. You are grounded in empathy, integrity, and a holistic approach to health.”

Joseph Anthony Giaimo, DO, FCCP, MACOI, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, presented the Commencement address. A 1987 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Giaimo also received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Dr. Feldstein during the event.

In addressing the graduates, Dr. Giaimo shared the positive side of what awaits them in their professional roles. He encouraged them to collaborate with their colleagues, get enough sleep, and find a hobby that will help them refresh.

“Bottom line: there’s no greater or more honorable way to spend your professional career than caring for others,” he said. “There’s no greater time to be a doctor of osteopathic medicine. And here’s the best news – patients are craving what you’ve been trained to do.”

Dr. Giamo continued by emphasizing the unique skill set DOs have.

“You leave here today not just as doctors,” he said. “You leave here as DOs. You have extra training, knowledge and understanding, not only to help your patients. Your job is to keep them well. May God bless each and every one of you. Now, go take care of the world!”

TIFTON, Ga. – Tift Regional Medical Center (TRMC) in Tifton is one of 339 hospitals in the U.S. and one of eight hospitals in Georgia to have a Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) rate of zero, as based on the healthcare-associated infections dataset from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and as recently reported by Becker’s Hospital Review. TRMC is the main hospital for Southwell.

“A CLABSI is a serious infection that occurs when germs enter the bloodstream through a central venous catheter, which is a long, thin tube inserted into a large vein of a patient,” said Charlotte Griffin, MSN, RN, CIC, Southwell’s Infection Prevention Lead. “The central venous catheter delivers fluids, medications, and blood products. CLABSI infections can lead to severe complications, including sepsis. Our team of physicians, nurses and other clinicians have worked hard to reduce CLABSIs through the implementation of evidence-based practices, protocols, checklists, and by fostering a culture of patient safety.”

The Healthcare-Associated Infections dataset, updated April 30, includes performance data for five types of infections collected through the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network. The measures show how often patients in a hospital contract infection during an inpatient stay compared to similar hospitals. The measures apply to all patients treated in acute care hospitals, including adult, pediatric, neonatal, Medicare and non-Medicare patients, according to the CMS data dictionary. Data was collected from July 2023 through June 2024.

“Thanks go to our incredible team for implementing proven interventions, using good hand hygiene, utilizing sterile barrier precautions, and always seeking continuous performance improvement,” said Griffin. “Our goal is to always provide safe, quality care for our valued patients.”

TRMC also recently earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit, independent watchdog organization focused on patient safety. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries, and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

DOUGLAS, Ga. – The GBI has arrested and charged Jon Worrell, age 58, of Douglas, Georgia, with Malice Murder, Felony Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Murder, and Aggravated Battery related to the death of his wife, Doris Worrell, almost 20 years ago. Jon, a current resident of Maryville, Missouri, was taken into custody without incident. The GBI and the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office were assisted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office, Nodaway County Sheriff’s Office, and the Maryville Department of Public Safety. Jon is currently waiting for an extradition hearing to determine the timing of his return to Coffee County, Georgia.

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Wild Adventures Theme Park and Splash Island Waterpark will begin daily summer operations on Saturday, May 24, kicking off the season with a Memorial Day Weekend celebration packed with fireworks, live entertainment, special admission offers, and the chance to explore the park’s newest themed area.

“Memorial Day Weekend is the official start of summer at Wild Adventures,” said Adam Floyd, director of sales and marketing. “We’ll be open every day starting May 21, and Splash Island opens everyday starting May 24. We’re launching the season with three unforgettable days of celebration, gratitude, and family fun.”

At the center of the weekend’s festivities is the Memorial Day Weekend Fireworks Spectacular, lighting up the night sky at 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25. Guests are encouraged to gather around the lake at Water’s Edge, the park’s vibrant new themed area, for the best view of the dazzling display set to music.

In honor of those who serve, Wild Adventures is offering free admission to all active and retired military members May 24 through May 26. Valid military ID or DD Form 214 is required.

The park is also once again partnering with Second Harvest of South Georgia to support families in need. Guests who bring at least $10 worth of non-perishable food items to donate at the front gate will receive 50 percent off admission. All donations will go directly to Second Harvest to help provide meals across the region.

“It’s a weekend where we get to celebrate the beginning of summer and say thank you to our military heroes and to generous guests who support their neighbors through food donations,” said Floyd. “It’s a weekend about fun, community, and connection.”

Guests will also have the chance to explore Water’s Edge, the park’s newly opened area designed to feel like a festive, tropical village by the water. Water’s Edge features three new rides: the soaring Wing Sw***er, the spinning Boat Parade, and the 68-foot-tall Horizon Wheel, offering sweeping views of the park. The area also includes shaded comfort zones, vibrant décor, a new reptile house and a brand-new stage for live entertainment.

The Water’s Edge Stage will come alive with music throughout the weekend, with Khemsitry bringing a high-energy mix of R&B, funk, and pop on Saturday and Blues Factor Trio performing soulful, feel-good hits on Sunday. Guests can enjoy the show with a cold drink and a delicious treat while kids ride the new attractions at Water’s Edge.

Guests can also enjoy a refreshing experience presented by the Georgia Watermelon Association. On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Oasis Outpost, guests can sample fresh watermelon, pick up take-home recipe cards, and collect fun giveaways like stickers, fans, and sunglasses. Katelyn Lindsay, the 2025 Georgia Watermelon Ambassador, will also be onsite to share her passion for Georgia agriculture and connect with families. Then on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m., the first ten guests to sign up at Splash Island Waterpark will have the chance to compete in a Watermelon Eating Contest, featuring Georgia grown watermelon.

To make the most of everything the park has to offer, guests are encouraged to purchase a Season Pass. Season Passholders can enjoy unlimited visits during Memorial Day Weekend, all summer long, and return for Great Pumpkin LumiNights and Wild Adventures Christmas—all for one low price.

“Whether you come for the fireworks, the rides, the music, or to make memories with family and friends, this weekend is only the beginning,” said Floyd. “With a Season Pass, the adventure continues all year.”
