As we near the 4th of July Holiday the Trenton Police and Fire Departments want to provide the citizens of Trenton with some general information regarding the use of fireworks within the city limits. The City of Trenton adopted an ordinance permitting the use of fireworks within the city limits in 2008, Ordinance # 254. The safety of our citizens is of the utmost importance and all of us here at the City of Trenton want to see that you, your family and friends, have a safe and enjoyable holiday! Below are some of the highlights from the ordinance.
• Fireworks can only be used / ignited within the city limits of Trenton between June 27th and July 4th.
• No person under eighteen (18) years of age may possess, purchase, explode or ignite any Class C common fireworks.
• No person shall explode or ignite any articles of fireworks within a motor vehicle. No person shall throw, launch or otherwise eject any articles of fireworks from a motor vehicle. NO PERSON SHALL THROW, LAUNCH OR OTHERWISE DIRECT ANY EXPLODED OR IGNITED ARTICLE OF FIREWORKS AT OR NEAR ANY PERSON OR GROUP OF PEOPLE.
• It is unlawful to explode or ignite fireworks within 600 feet of any church, asylum, hospital, public school or within 200 feet of where fireworks are stored, sold, or offered for sale.
• It is unlawful to explode or ignite fireworks after 10:00 P.M.
• It is unlawful to explode or ignite fireworks on city streets.
• Fireworks may only be exploded or ignited upon property owned by the consumer or upon property whose owner has given expressed permission.
• No bottle rockets may be exploded or ignited within the city limits.
• Any violations of this ordinance shall be punishable by a fine of $50.00 for each occurrence.
Over this past weekend, the Trenton Police Department and our elected officials received a number of complaints from citizens regarding the safe use of fireworks within the city limits. Some of the more serious complaints involve people shooting fireworks at each other, at structures including homes, and at public safety personnel and their vehicles. Aside from criminal prosecution, these senseless and irresponsible acts puts everyone’s lives and personal property in danger. For this reason, the police department is taking a “zero tolerance” approach to anyone found responsible for any of the afore mentioned acts.
The 4th of July Holiday is a time to celebrate the birth of our nation, responsibly. Shooting off fireworks here in Trenton has been permitted for several years, however this ordinance is subject to change if the city determines that the risk of endangering lives and damage to personal property outweighs continuing to permit the sale, possession, and use of fireworks within the city limits. For the safety and wellbeing of our community, we encourage those who elect to shoot off fireworks to do it responsibly and to abide by the city ordinance.

TSSAA Board of Control Adjusts Fall Transfer Processing in Special Called Meeting

Decision allows for earlier submission and processing of transfers for fall sports

The Board of Control held a special called meeting on Wednesday, June 18 to discuss the timing of transfer form submissions for the upcoming school year. The Board voted unanimously to allow transfer forms and hardship applications for fall sports to be submitted by schools and processed by the state office beginning July 14, 2025.

The state office has previously leaned on the definition of enrollment as found in the TSSAA Bylaws when processing transfer forms that are received in the summer prior to the first official date of practice for fall sports. This has prevented the state office from processing transfer forms or hardship applications until after a student has participated in three or more days of practice after the first official practice date for fall sports if the student did not finish the previous school year at their new school. It is not uncommon for the state office to receive many of these requests at this time of year, and those transfer forms sit idle until after official practice starts.
