“Let the church say Amen.”
While getting my haircut on Friday, the conversation between me and my barber drifted into a profound spiritual topic. In many barbershops, the discussion can wander into football, basketball, politics, or the latest neighborhood news. However, beyond the clippers and chatter, the barbershop has always been a hub for meaningful conversations in every community.
One word that caught my attention was "amen." He asked, "Do you know what the word 'amen' means?" Meanwhile, we say words out of habit without knowing the origin of the words.
The word Amen is a Hebrew word that means “so be it,” “truly,” “let it be,” or “it is faithful.” It comes from the Hebrew root ʾāmán, which carries the idea of firmness, certainty, and trustworthiness.
When people say "Amen" at the end of a prayer or statement, they are affirming it—agreeing that it is true and expressing confidence that God will bring it to pass.
In the Bible, "Amen" is used in two main ways:
At the end of prayers or blessings—to confirm agreement (Deuteronomy 27, Psalms, 1 Corinthians 14:16)
By Jesus Himself—He often began His teachings with “Verily, verily” (or “Truly, truly” in modern translations), which is actually the Greek form of Amen (John 3:3).
So when you say "Amen," you’re really saying:
✔️ “Yes, I agree.”
✔️ “It is true.”
✔️ “May it be so.”
My hat goes out to this young barber. I'm proud of him for making me think. Keep shining, young man. This was a much-needed conversation. Healthy conversations keep me on my toes. Amen.
Don't miss the message while trying to understand the Messenger. You guys better stay with me. I'm going somewhere with these inspirations. Have a super Saturday. Let's go!
