The three middle schools in the county — Wilbanks Middle, South Habersham Middle, and North Habersham Middle — named five students who will be the REACH scholars of the 2030 graduating class. Josie Sarbon, Ashawnti Rambert, Daniel Martinez, Jasmine Solorzano and Jennifer Gonzalez are this year’s REACH Scholarship recipients.
The Raider Basketball Hall of Fame welcomes Rita Tench Gunter as a new member. The three-year varsity letterman for the Raiders was honored in an induction ceremony on Friday evening, Dec. 19 at the Raider Gymnasium.
Northeast Georgia native Kevin Queen was inducted to Raider Basketball Hall of Fame and was celebrated through a ceremony on Friday evening, Dec. 19 at the Raider Gymnasium. Queen played three years as point guard, only missing his sophomore season due to injury. He graduated from Habersham Central High School in 2009.
Demorest Fire Chief David Scheuerer resigned from the position effective immediately, per his resignation letter sent out on Dec. 17, leaving just two weeks shy of the final day of the Demorest Fire Department.
“You can never give too much. Even if you think you don’t have the ability to give, there’s somebody out there who needs something that you have, and we all have a talent that we can share or a gift for taking care of people that nobody else does, so that’s where you get to figure out your place and your purpose in the community.”

The Raiders (8-2, 1-0) cruised 75-47 and the Lady Raiders (5-4, 0-1) dominated 61-29 against Stephens County at the Raider Gymnasium on Friday, Dec. 19. There was a Raider Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony in between games for Rita Tench Gunter and Kevin Queen. Stories for each inductee will be in the Dec. 26 edition of The Northeast Georgian.
A legion of law enforcement officers were seen in Walmart on Friday afternoon, though they were accompanied by the friendly face of Santa Claus and a group of students and families, ready to pick out what they wanted for the most wonderful time of the year.
Though the clock is ticking for Alto to pass a 2026 budget before the new year, Georgia Municipal Association Member Services Consultant Pete Pyrzenski advised council on Thursday that if they don’t have updated financials by Dec. 29, members may have to table the budget vote again, meaning that a budget decision may bleed into next year.
In 2024, 163 Habersham County students, or 2.16 percent of students, qualified as beneficiaries under the McKinney-Vento Act, a federal law outlining the rights of students who are defined as homeless, or unhoused. This year, the school system has identified 73 students who qualify for resources under the McKinney-Vento Act, and that number is expected to rise as the school year continues.

The Northeast Georgian is one of Habersham County's oldest and most respected business establishments. The Georgian began publishing in 1892 and in 1990 merged with Tri-County Advertiser.
The newspaper is dedicated to serving the people of Habersham County. It is the only publication both in print and online that is solely dedicated to chronicling the lives of Habersham County and its residents.
With a total circulation exceeding 10,000, the newspaper publishes two print editions each week. One issue is published on Wednesdays, and the second is delivered on Fridays.
In addition, the newspaper publishes this online edition which is updated on the same days that its printed product is delivered. When news events dictate, this Web site is updated with breaking news before it is published in the newspaper.
Located at 2440 Old Athens Highway in Cornelia this office houses the newspaper's editorial, advertising, composing and administrative staff, and the building also serves as the home of Georgia Mountain Press which prints The Northeast Georgian as well as community newspapers in surrounding counties. Alan NeSmith serves as the regional publisher of The Northeast Georgian.
The newspaper has more than 45 full- and part-time employees. Our goal is outlined in the mission statement that runs in each issue of our newspaper. It reads:
