This topic has intrigued me for a long time and I’ve never heard someone address it before. So I wanted to address this myself in hopes that it helps all of you who are building your personal brands online to know when is the right time to talk about your losses.

As always there are exceptions to the rule but in my opinion this is a great principle to go by.   I’ve seen this played out time and time again.

With many of the biggest names online, you never hear someone share: “Hey just yesterday my business almost completely collapsed due to financial strain. Here’s my number to work with me.”  I think the scars vs wounds analogy should be a great gauge for you to go by if you’re unsure when you can share your losses.

Does building a personal brand require in-depth strategy and systems? Yes, if you want to go big.

BUT... Only after you understand the basic premise, which is telling your actual story, showing up as the person you actually are, and talking about what you're actually doing and what you plan to be doing in the future.

I get it. We all are tempted to show up as a fabricated version of ourselves, but the reality is it's hard to build trust and for people to connect with someone who's perfect every day online.

So for those of you just getting started or haven't even started yet, I hope this simple piece of advice is helpful to you.

Some of the most credible people I know are invisible online.

Not because they lack expertise. Because they never made their value obvious.

Here is the uncomfortable part: People don't reward you for how much you know. They reward you for what your knowing does for them.

And that always comes back to four things: their money, their time, their risk, or their status.

That is the whole list. If your content, your advice, or your offer doesn't clearly move at least one of them, it reads as noise, even when the expertise behind it is real.

The fix isn't posting more. It's getting sharp about which lever you pull, and saying it in plain, specific words. "I save you time" is a claim. "I give you back your Sunday nights" is a lever being pulled.

You keep telling yourself you'll start once the brand looks right.

The logo. The website. The perfect content plan.

But your ideal clients aren't waiting for perfect. They're looking for someone who shows up and solves their problem. While you polish, someone less qualified is getting seen.

Famous brands aren't born clean. They're built in public, one messy post at a time.

Start now. Fix it as you go.

For for years, I hid behind a logo, thinking that was my brand.

I agonized over colors, reprinted my business cards twice. Meanwhile, the thing actually selling the furniture was me. In the shop, sawdust on my hands, telling someone why I chose to restore a piece in a certain way.

I had it backwards the whole time. The business page was never the brand. I was.

Most professionals are still making my old mistake, hiding behind a logo. What that's quietly costing you is wild.
