Illness & Hydration
When illnesses happen it's important to remember that staying hydrated and rested helps your body fight infection and recover faster.
Illness increases fluid loss through things like fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. This makes hydration really important for recovery by supporting immune function, flushing toxins, thinning mucus, cell function and regulating temperature.
For those with Diabetes, it’s more than dehydration. It’s having an “increased” risk of dehydration causing unstable blood sugars, unexplained lows, stubborn highs, ketones, decreased appetite, worsening fatigue and sometimes extra trips to the Dr or ER. Dehydration also causes your kidneys to work harder than normal, and with diabetes they are already doing that. Hydration is so important for kidney health.
Staying hydrated can include: drinking water, broth, electrolyte solutions (pedialyte or gatorade), herbal teas, ice chips, popsicles or IV fluids. Each person is different on how they choose to stay hydrated and based on age.
If you're dehydrated or sick it’s important to avoid sugary drinks (juice, pop and energy drinks), caffeine and alcohol, as they naturally have a dehydrating effect.
If illness, like the flu strikes you or your family, and nausea and/or vomiting are bad enough that you can’t keep liquids down, here are some tips that might help:
-Sip frequently - small sips every few minutes is still hydration.
-Ice chips and/or popsicles
-Eating hydrating foods: fruits (melon or berries) & vegetables (cucumbers or celery).
If you have tried all the tips and tricks from here or from your Mom or Grandma and are not getting any better, your best option may be to get IV fluids. Some Doctors offices, Outpatient settings, Urgent Care or the ER can offer these.
Depending on the severity of your illness, here at, AT Your Wellness we too can offer fluids.
That being said, we evaluate and require intake forms on every single person that reaches out to us. We may direct you to go to your nearest clinic or ER. We are not Urgent Care or an ER.
If you feel like illness is coming on or everyone around you is getting sick, we do offer a Tri Immune blend. It can help keep the duration of your illness low and/or possibly avoiding the progression of the illness all together.
Stay healthy, stay hydrated and stay rested!
