MY DAUGHTER ASKED MY MIL, "WHAT DO YOU HIDE IN YOUR PURSE?"—THE TRUTH BROKE ME.
My husband, James, was splitting his time between two cities for work. He was gone half the week, and I stayed home with our 6-year-old daughter, Lily.
His mother, Carol, started visiting more often. At first, it felt thoughtful. She brought casseroles, folded laundry, played with Lily.
Yesterday, we were three of us in the kitchen. I was loading the dishwasher, Carol sipped her tea, and Lily sat at the table coloring quietly.
Then she looked up, so casually—like she was asking for a snack—and said:
"MOMMY, WHY DOES GRANDMA ALWAYS TAKE STUFF FROM YOUR BEDROOM?" and turned to MIL, "WHAT DO YOU HIDE IN YOUR PURSE?"
Carol choked on her tea.
She coughed, hard, patting her chest, eyes wide. My hands froze on a plate.
"What… did you say, sweetie?" I asked, keeping my voice light.
Lily shrugged. "She goes in there a lot when you're not upstairs. She takes something and puts it in her big purse."
The room was silent except for the sound of Carol's spoon clinking nervously against her teacup.
I turned to her, very slowly. "Open your purse."⬇️
