Not always the most popular but certainly the most unique; China cymbals create a punctuating accent that is hard to miss. With so many variations and use cases, we couldn’t overlook the importance of this particular type of cymbal and its many variations.

New Episode!
It’s generally recognized that different stick tips will yield different sounds, particularly on cymbals, but how much noticeable variation is there and what sorts of tonal qualities do the tip shapes possess? We gathered seven different models of sticks for back-to-back comparisons while referencing other attributes that contribute to the change in tone.

New Cymbal Sounds episode!
14” hihats have been the standard for quite some time with small variations for unique applications but extreme sizes have become more and more common in recent years with drummers pairing up crash and even ride cymbals. In this episode we explore a setup with a pair of 18” crashes and some gigantic 22” ride cymbals that perform incredibly well. We’ll also cover some logistical and functional things to be aware of if you decide to pursue hihats-on-steroids.

Gear, equipment, instruments, accessories. You might not even be aware of it but there’s a good chance it’s getting in the way of your growth as a musician. It’s possible to enjoy the gear side of drumming without it becoming a dominant force. Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS) has been normalized but the negative impact is astounding. Follow the practices in this episode to prevent the onset of effects that impede your musical journey.

New Cymbal Sounds Episode: https://youtu.be/6nRhdNjZyig
If you go back and review photos and footage of a handful of jazz drummers through the ages, you may notice something odd about their hihat cymbals- sometimes they don’t match in size. In fact, sometimes the difference between top and bottom cymbals was as much as an inch. While this creates some potential issues with stick wear, we decided to do some experimenting of our own with a couple sets of mismatched hihats to see what we thought and we’re VERY glad that we did.

There’s a good chance that you spend quite a bit of time practicing alone and, as a result, listening to your drums on their own without musical context. Certain overtones may stick out to you and drive you to muffle the drums to “fix” the problem. But how does this impact sound within a musical performance? We’ve got a whole collection of demonstrations for you to illustrate how context molds our perception of drum sounds.

Let’s say you’re looking for the perfect combination of power and dynamics out of your toms. You want full tone, good attack and excellent dynamic range out of the softest rolls to the most aggressive. Your favorite drummers’ kits speak with this kind of authority so you want that for yourself. But you’re not totally sure how each of the parts of the drum contribute to this final sound. Do you need more muffling? Do you need a certain interval between the two heads? Or a specialized batter head to get there? If you’re not sure about any of that this is the video for you.

We like thinking outside the box with our gear and this particular concept using an X-hat arm seemed right up our alley. Part stack, part sizzle ride, part hihat- this experimental setup is actually quite practical for lots of musical scenarios.

Tuning a snare drum is a bit like solving a puzzle. If you don’t understand how the puzzle works, it can feel impossible. Today, we’re demonstrating how to experiment in a methodical fashion. This will help you understand the cause and effect of changes in a single variable. As you experiment on your own, patterns emerge and it becomes easier to predict the outcome of a given action. This is the fastest, most comprehensive way of gaining control of your drum sound.
