Del Mar College is investigating a cyber security incident involving Canvas after students and faculty received an alert from the colleges Information Technology department on Thursday afternoon.

The alert said Del Mar College officials are aware of the security incident affecting Canvas and are actively investigating any potential impact to the college.

The cybercriminal group, ShinyHunters, has claimed responsibility for the attack and released a massive list of schools, universities, districts and organizations it claims were affected. The list is alleged and has not been fully verified by each institution.

The list includes several Texas and local institutions, including Del Mar College, Corpus Christi ISD, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Alamo Colleges, Houston ISD, Katy ISD, Arlington ISD, Texas State Technical College, University of North Texas, Fort Worth, ISD, Denton ISD, University of Texas at San Antonio, and many more.

Officials said Canvas users may experience disruptions while the issue is being monitored. At this time, Del Mar College has not confirmed whether any students or employee data was compromised.

The college said updates will continue to be shared as more information becomes available.

This is a developing story.
