Stories of Hope Amid Tragedy
Amid the death and destruction caused by the flooding in Central Texas this week, some are finding hope in stories of heroic and unlikely rescues, as well as the massive outpouring of support from fellow Texans.

Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskan, 26, has been credited with coordinating the evacuation of 165 people at Camp Mystic. Helicopters transported campers and staff members in groups of 10 to 15 at a time.

Center Point resident Carl Jeter, 70, directed first responders to a 22-year-old woman stranded in a tree after getting swept into the Guadalupe River 20 miles upstream in Ingram. Also, Riata Schoepf of Belton, the 19-year-old daughter of Schoepf’s BBQ owner Ronnie Schoepf, was lifted by helpers into a house with bed sheets after struggling to stay afloat in the current for about 20 minutes.

H-E-B, which was founded in Kerrville, delivered food to victims there and in Marble Falls and San Angelo. Grant Pinkerton, the owner of Pinkerton's Barbecue in Houston and San Antonio, dropped off meals in Kerrville and plans to come back again this week.

Parole Denied for Selena's Killer
Yolanda Saldívar, convicted of murdering Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla-Pérez in 1995, was denied parole Thursday, just days before the 30th anniversary of Selena’s death.

Saldívar was removed as president of Selena's fan club and manager of Selena Etc. boutiques over embezzlement allegations before she shot and killed the singer-songwriter.

The parole board, citing the brutality of Saldívar’s crimes and her “conscious disregard” for others, denied her release; her next review is scheduled for March 2030.

Selena’s family expressed gratitude for the board’s decision, posting on social media, "While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand."
