South Texas Catholic

South Texas Catholic The South Texas Catholic is the official publication for the Diocese of Corpus Christi.

In the Diocese of Corpus Christi's evangelization efforts we serve as a medium for the bishop’s messages; a venue to report activities of parishes, institutions and organizations; a way of keeping the faithful abreast of national and international issues facing the church; and a vehicle to promote the work of diocesan departments, programs and services.

October is Respect Life Month! The Catholic Church invites us to reflect on the dignity of every human life and to work to build a culture of life that protects it from conception to natural death. We are made in the image and likeness of God - and that affects how we treat every human being.

We love our priests, deacons and sisters! Around 150 people attended the 32nd Annual Clergy and Religious Appreciation Banquet at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church. This yearly dinner, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, honors the service and dedication of our priests, deacons, sisters and lay consecrated men and women in our diocese. After a social hour and a delicious dinner, Fr. James Vasquez, Vocation Director of our Diocese, gave a keynote speech on vocation ministry: “My job as a vocation director is to help young people discern,” he said. Discerning is not deciding between options, but rather “seeing,” as when the light at sunrise helps distinguish things. A vocation always belongs to God. “It is not my vocation; I don’t possess it! God is calling us because there is a need.” The Knights of Columbus presented Bishop Mulvey with a $31,000 check for a charity of his choice. He decided to give to the Ark Assessment Center and Emergency Shelter for children, led by Sr. Milagros.

Rachel’s Vineyard is a Catholic, Scripture-based healing retreat that combines prayer, reflection, counseling, and sacramental reconciliation for women who have had an abortion or parents who have suffered a miscarriage. These days allow you to experience God’s forgiveness, mercy, and compassion. The retreats provide a safe space to renew, rebuild, and redeem broken hearts, taking steps toward genuine psychological and spiritual healing.
You will journey with other women and men who have also experienced the loss of a child through abortion or miscarriage.
For the Corpus Christi diocese, a retreat is scheduled for October 24-26.

The Red Mass tradition originated in Europe in 1245, when members of the legal community gathered for Mass at the start of each judicial year. The event's name refers to the red vestments worn by clergy, symbolizing the Holy Spirit. Bishop Mulvey celebrated the Red Mass yesterday at St. Patrick's, with judges, attorneys and others who work in the legal field, attending:
