A few snapshots of my reporting days
1. Haiti - Many people had to dig themselves out of the rubble. Many did not make it. Witnessing sorrow, loss, kindness and hope. These moments live in my DNA forever.
2. When I won a Lone Star Emmy for a series about access to healthcare in Texas, it validated that stories advocating for quality care matter. Access impacts quality of life and everyone’s pocket book. ER In Critical Condition.
3. The magical moment in Morocco, when I launched Global Voice Productions. I took the leap to leave the daily reporting grind to focus on sharing the voice of those who need to be heard around the world. And I’m grateful that many of the news outlets I previously worked for, welcomed and aired my stories. 2009! Time flies.
4. On the World Health Organization truck to get a shot! We were reporting on moms and babies dying in childbirth for and how was installing solar panels - light - that many of us take for granted could mean the difference between a safe or high-risk delivery.
5. Among the riskiest moments in my career was venturing into “West Point”, in Monrovia, Liberia, where many former combatants live. Why did I go? Because before many took up arms they were child soldiers. It is a place where the line between victim and perpetrator is blurred. The poet Rumi said, “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field.I’ll meet you there.”
