Before Corpus Christi became a port city—and long before modern drilling technology, locals along the White Point Peninsula were already reading the land like a map.

Grains of sulfur in the sand, gas seeping from water holes and even fiery blowouts that lit up the night sky were early clues that something powerful lay beneath the surface. These dramatic discoveries helped unlock nearby oil fields, fueled regional growth and ultimately played a role in shaping the deep-water port that transformed Corpus Christi in 1926.

Dive into the story of the fiery beginnings that helped build the Coastal Bend in the Looking Back story from the January issue:

Pam Chavez didn’t just open a restaurant; she opened a chapter of her life.
What was once Sam and Louie’s has been reimagined as Saucy Mamas, a globally inspired, deeply personal pizza concept without limitations.

From lupin-flour crusts and anti-inflammatory bowls to signature pies like the Honeyfire and Seoul Kiss, every detail is a reflection of Chavez’s lived experience and her belief that food can be both craveable and healing.

Flash back to 2005 and House of Rock's tamale dinner was about more than full plates and festive flavors; it was about showing up for one another.

After learning that several neighboring Caller employees had little time off and few holiday plans, the team stepped in to share one of South Texas’ most meaningful traditions: tamales. What began as a simple gesture became a moment of comfort, connection and community.

20+ years later and the tradition is still going strong every Christmas Eve. Tamales from Chachos Tacos , salsa (NOT ketchup) from JalaPeña's Salsa and plenty of holiday cheer abound at House of Rock!
