We call this puzzle season...that time when it gets dark and cold so early that you can't do stuff outside. We don't watch much TV and there's nothing decent to watch anyway. So, we do puzzles. But Clark got us a different kind of puzzle for Christmas. It's really a wooden model cuckoo clock...and it works!

We just finished it tonight. It's adorable!!

If you didn't know, we live near the Four Corners. We can see both Mesa Verde National Park and Canyons of the Ancients National Monument from our house. Hovenweep National Monument isn't much further. A LOT of tourists pass through the area every year.

But I'm sure they miss out on some hidden gems. One being Books, our small town new and used bookstore.

Back when we were RVING I made it a point to visit fun, famous, and quirky bookstores. I saw David Sedaris at 2 different shops in 2 different states for readings and book signings. The bookstore in Quartzite, AZ was famous for the nakkid guy who oe6ned and operated it. My friend, .sessa and I were fortunate to not only meet the owner, Paul, but we got a mini concert, too. Sadly. Paul passed away a few years ago.

Another gem was Singing Wind Bookstore in Benson, AZ. Out in the middle of nowhere, on an old homestead, inside an old racnch style home was one of the best book shops I've seen...and I've seen a lot.

Well, Books in Cortez, is similar to Singing Wind. It's in an old house and you might need a tour to see how it's all laid out, but it has so many gems. They get new used books quite often and make a point to carry lots of local authors as well as books about the area.

Whether you're local to the area or passing through, Books is worth a stop. Be prepared to spend some time and you'll be amazed at what you find.

Is Frank upset that Christmas is over or that he can't reach high enough to steal the Christmas ornaments?

I'm waking up my sourdough starter (Robert Breadford) to send a bit off to a friend in Florida. It nearly quadrupled in size so I thought I'd use a little up. I made naan! I added a little freshly ground spelt (ground into flour in my 30+ year old Vitamix). It turned out great...even the husband can't stop eating it!

We chose Christmas Day so our wedding anniversary would always be extra special. We rented a cabin for a month in North Lake Tahoe, away from all the busyness and crowds found in South Lake. We wanted quiet, forested, and tranquil. Of course, only a handful of people could get away from the normal hustle and bustle of Christmas with work and family obligations, too. But man, the one's who showed up, showed up big.

We hired a preacher for $125. He must have been nearly 90 years old. He was kind and generous and we loved the words he shared. We didn't rent a hall or pay for the privilege of getting married at Squaw Valley Ski Resort...we just found an unoccupied fire pit and had a wedding. I wore a white ski outfit and Clark wore his black one. My mom made a bouquet.

It was amazing. And perfect. And memorable. After exchanging vows we went to a bar in the ski village and made toasts. Then back to the cabin for a gift exchange and Christmas dinner...

Christmas is special for so many reasons (Jesus being born is the biggie) but I also married my best friend.

Our circle of gift-giving may be small, but that allows us to focus more on heartfelt, handmade gifts. This year that includes some winter treats like brownie mix, hot Cocoa, spiced pecans and walnuts, aged vanilla extract, and sugar scrubs. It's not only fun to gift things you made yourself, but it's fun to make them as well. Merry Christmas Eve!

Cinnabun Coffee Cake!

I made this using my bread machine to mix the dough and go through it's rise. Then I baked it in the oven. I made a video of the entire process. It includes how I make my own brown sugar and powdered sugar. These are both simple to make and allows you to use better ingredients without spending more money. The coffee cake tastes like you favorite cinnamon rolls without the hassle of rolling the out and cutting them.
