Covina History: Why Is Second Street So Wide?

Ever wonder why Second Street in Covina is noticeably wider than the others? This photo from 1939 shows the old U.S. Post Office with palm trees lining the median that once ran down the center of the street. 🌴

Back in the day, folks arriving in Covina came by train, with the station located at the north end of Second Street. It was a community ritual to gather at the station in the evening to welcome back friends returning from a shopping trip to L.A.

When the Pacific Electric line came to town, its stop at Badillo and Second made this area even more of a gateway. Still, that doesn’t explain the extra width.

That credit goes to Italia Richmond Cook, who donated the land to the city. City leaders used the generous gift to create a palm-lined median stretching from Front Street to Puente Avenue, giving Second Street the iconic look we remember - at least until 1942.

A small detail with a big story behind it. Covina’s history is all around us.

Just got word that after years of chrome, cruisin’, and community vibes, Thunderfest will not be happening in 2025.

The Downtown Merchants are cooking up something new… I don’t know what, but for now, we’re pouring one out for all the memories, burnouts, and throwback jams we’ve enjoyed.
