The Lawyer Millionaire We're on a mission to help law firm owners maximize wealth and achieve financial independence!

If your business only appears profitable because you're hiring attorneys at market rate and keeping your own salary low, you need to know that.

Otherwise, you may spend years telling yourself that you're building a successful business when you're actually buying yourself a stressful job.

The solution isn't necessarily to stop investing in growth.

It's to make sure that growth doesn't come at the expense of your own financial future.

At some point, paying yourself appropriately needs to become just as important as reinvesting in the business.

One of the most important yet often overlooked question for law firm owners is how much should you pay yourself?

On this episode, I discuss why many law firm owners make the mistake of paying themselves whatever is left after covering payroll, rent, marketing, software, and other expenses. This can create the illusion of profitability while the owner is actually subsidizing the firm's growth by underpaying themselves.

If you’re one of the lowest paid attorneys in your own firm, this episode is a wake-up call. Darren Wurz shows why “I’ll take what’s left over” is not a strategy, why growth funded by your unpaid wages is fake growth, and how to separate your true market wage from your profit distribution.

The result: a clearer picture of what your firm is actually worth, and whether it’s serving your life or silently draining it.

You’ll discover:
- Why a law firm owner should be the highest paid person in the business?
- How to think about your market wage as both the lawyer and the leader
- Why profit looks bigger on paper when you underpay yourself?
- How to use owner pay as a real profitability test, not a bookkeeping afterthought

Darren also explains how S corp tax treatment can help reduce self-employment taxes, what a “reasonable salary” really means, and why your W-2 and draws must be defensible under a reasonable compensation test.

Businesses must continually adapt their “business design” to where customers and economic value are moving.
In this snippet, I share the importance of financial resilience in a rapidly changing world.

Creating value is only half the battle.
You also need something that helps you capture and protect that value.

Adrian J. Slywotzky the author of The Profit Zone calls this a strategic control point.

For a law firm, it might be:
- Deep expertise in a highly specialized niche
- Ownership of the customers information flow
- A powerful referral network
- A distinctive brand
- A unique client experience

Every good business design has at least one strategic control point.

Does your business have a strategic control point?

In this teaser I discuss where value is going out of in the legal profession

AI is already being used across the legal profession for activities such as document review, legal research, summarization, and contract drafting.

According to a Thomson Reuters report, among legal professionals using AI in 2025:

77% used it for document review
74% used it for legal research
74% used it to summarize documents summarization
59% used it to draft briefs or memos

This creates an uncomfortable question for traditional law firms:

If AI can increasingly perform the work that clients have historically paid lawyers to perform, what exactly are clients going to pay you for?

On this episode I discuss Law Firm Profitability in the AI era

A successful business can be surprisingly unprofitable.

That is one of the central ideas in The Profit Zone by Adrian Slywotzky and David Morrison and it may be one of the most important ideas for law firm owners to understand today.

For decades, businesses have been encouraged to chase market share: get more clients, increase revenue, hire more people, and become the biggest player in the market.

But market share doesn't guarantee profitability.

Companies such as IBM, General Motors, Kodak, Sears, US Steel, and United Airlines were market leaders when their profitability began to collapse.

Why?

Their business models had moved into what Slywotzky calls a no-profit zone.

The same thing can happen to a law firm.

And artificial intelligence may be accelerating the process.
