After the Senate passage of the tax and spending bill, hospitals are hoping to limit the damage before the bill heads to President Trump's desk. The House is taking up the legislation, and hospitals are pressing lawmakers to make some changes.

The Senate signed off on a tax package that hospitals adamantly opposed, saying it would leave millions without Medicaid coverage. Hospitals say it would do ‘irreparable harm.’

As lawmakers try to finalize the tax bill before the July 4 deadline, hospital trade groups are pressing lawmakers to reject it. The Federation of American Hospitals and American Hospital Association have written letters to senators imploring them to reject the deal.

For the third year in a row, Duke Regional Hospital ranked at the top of the Lown Institute's list of America's most socially responsible hospitals. Jason Carter, president and COO of Duke Regional, said the hospital is striving to find ways to meet people outside the four walls of the hospital. "We're in the business of meeting people where they are," he said.

The Lown Institute again put the North Carolina hospital at the top spot in its annual ranking of providers. Jason Carter, the hospital’s president, says Duke has a commitment to access.

Hospitals say the Senate tax bill is even more disappointing than the House version, with bigger cuts to Medicaid. Sr. Mary Haddad, president & CEO of The Catholic Health Association of the United States, said the Senate plan would leave millions without coverage and could lead to hospital closures. "The bill unconscionably creates Medicaid cuts even further, which will only result in more people losing coverage, more facilities struggling to stay open, and more people not able to get the life saving care that they so desperately need," she said.

Advocates for hospitals said the Senate measure would mean bigger Medicaid cuts and millions losing coverage. They warn some providers would weigh cutting services and even closing their doors.

The American Diabetes Association and The Leapfrog Group are recognizing hospitals for providing excellent care for patients with diabetes. Nearly a third of hospital patients have diabetes. Novant Health and Geisinger both have several hospitals receiving honors.

With the House of Representatives approving a tax bill that would bring significant cuts to Medicaid, hospitals are pressing the Senate to protect Medicaid. Chip Kahn, president and CEO of the Federation of American Hospitals, summed up the sentiment of hospital leaders. He said the legislation, if unchanged, would "cause millions of Americans to lose coverage, and be a death knell to critical hospital services and entire communities’ access to care."

Health systems have said the House package would leave millions without coverage and could lead to hospital closures. They’re hoping to persuade the Senate to avert the cuts.
