A 21-year-old woman was found dead Monday morning at a home in the Knightsville section of Cranston, police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.

According to the Cranston Police Department, officers responded to 51 Kingwood Ave. at approximately 8:37 a.m. after the property’s owner called 911. Police said the owner entered the first-floor apartment to investigate water leaking into the basement and found the 62-year-old female tenant suffering from what appeared to be self-inflicted lacerations.

Cranston police officers and firefighters responded to the home, provided emergency medical care, and transported the woman to Rhode Island Hospital. She is currently listed in stable condition, according to police.

While conducting a protective sweep of the apartment, officers discovered the woman’s 21-year-old daughter deceased in a separate bedroom. Investigators said the cause and manner of the young woman’s death were not immediately apparent.

Police confirmed the mother and daughter were the only people living in the first-floor apartment.

The residence, located directly across the street from Peters Elementary School, remained an active crime scene throughout the day as detectives with the Cranston Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation executed a court-authorized search warrant. Investigators from the Rhode Island Office of the State Medical Examiners also responded to the scene and will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

The investigation remains active, and police said they cannot yet confirm whether foul play was involved. However, investigators do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.

The Peters PTO announced that its Midsummer Meet-Up fundraiser, originally scheduled for Monday evening at the school’s playground, has been postponed. The event has been rescheduled for Monday, Aug. 3, at 5:30 p.m.

Authorities have not released the identity of the 21-year-old woman, and no arrests have been made. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Cranston PD as the investigation continues.

West Nile Virus Detected in Cranston, State Confirms Second Positive Mosquito Sample of 2026

State health and environmental officials have confirmed that West Nile virus has been detected in a mosquito sample collected in Cranston, marking Rhode Island’s second positive mosquito sample for the virus this year.

The mosquitoes were collected on July 14 and later tested by the Rhode Island State Health Laboratories. Officials said no other mosquito samples collected across the state have tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV), or additional West Nile virus at this time.

Rhode Island remains at a medium risk level for West Nile virus statewide.

West Nile virus is the most common mosquito-borne disease in the United States. Most people who become infected do not develop symptoms, but about 1 in 5 may experience fever, headaches, body aches, fatigue, or other flu-like symptoms. In rare cases, the virus can lead to more serious illness.

Health officials recommend reducing your risk by using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors, eliminating standing water around your home, and avoiding mosquito activity during dawn and dusk whenever possible.

Budlong Is Back: Cranston Welcomes a New Generation of Summer Memories

After six years, one of Cranston’s most beloved summer traditions officially returned today as the Budlong Aquatic Center opened its doors to the public at noon.

Families lined up to be among the first to enjoy the new facility, marking the end of a long wait since the original Budlong Pool closed in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee joined Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins, city officials, and community members for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the reopening of this historic location.

Originally opened in 1940, Budlong Pool was once considered one of the largest municipal swimming pools in the United States. The original pool measured approximately 22,000 square feet and held nearly 1 million gallons of water. The new Budlong Aquatic Center measures just under 8,000 square feet and holds approximately 180,000 gallons, making it about 64% smaller while offering modern amenities designed for today’s families.

The new aquatic center features lap lanes, a splash pad, an ADA-accessible pool entrance, renovated locker rooms and restrooms, shaded seating, picnic tables with umbrellas, a cookout area, and the beautifully restored historic WPA-era pool house. While the building’s historic exterior has been preserved, the interior has been completely modernized.

The project was estimated at $4.75 million and was funded through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars along with a federal grant. The facility is designed to accommodate approximately 400 swimmers, with additional space for about 150 visitors throughout the surrounding recreation area.

For many Cranston residents, today’s opening was more than the return of a swimming pool. It marked the return of a summer tradition that generations have enjoyed for decades. While the new facility looks much different than the original, it’s once again filled with families, laughter, and the sounds of summer.
