Traces of Texas reader Kelly Watson was nice enough to send in this nifty 1960s photo of downtown Cross Plains, Texas. I'm glad he did, because Cross Plains is one of my favorite small Texas towns. The name "Cross Plains" isn't just poetic, it's descriptive, because “Cross Plains” sits where different ecological regions sort of collide: the rolling plains of West Texas and the edge of the Cross Timbers. Early settlers used the name to describe that sense of intersecting landscapes. The sidewalks downtown still have some of the old horse rings. If you visit, go to the Backwoods Texas Grill. It's a good mom-and-pop place. Pro tip: order the fried pickles.
Thank you, Kelly. Cool shot!
