Day 2 of our journey was pleasantly uneventful as we continued making our way north through Virginia.

For the night, we stayed at another Harvest Hosts location, Shenandoah Caverns. One thing we’re quickly learning is how much we enjoy keeping our travel days short. Instead of spending long hours on the road, we had plenty of time to settle in, relax, and enjoy a slow evening.

We decided not to tour the caverns this time around, but we did enjoy some delicious burgers in the café and took in a bit of the nostalgia and charm of the property.

My favorite part of the evening was sitting outside and watching a herd of deer frolic in the field across the road from our campsite. Moments like that are exactly why we chose this lifestyle.

Thursday we’ll be back on the road for the final leg of our trip before settling into our campground for a week while we explore Washington, D.C.

🚐 Day 1: Not Exactly According to Plan
Well, our first travel day didn’t go quite as smoothly as I had envisioned.
Big Bertha has a garage/toy hauler that doubles as my sewing room, and in a moment of optimism (or poor judgment 🤦‍♀️), I decided not to secure one of my cabinets. Somewhere between Point A and Point B,
the cabinet ended up on its side and, in the process, cracked our patio door and broke the lower locks. Thankfully, the ramp door is still secure, so it’s not a disaster—but definitely not the souvenir I was hoping to collect on Day 1. We’ll file this one under: Lesson Learned.

Since we prefer to be off the road by around 3:00 PM, we typically travel only 200–250 miles a day. For our first night, I booked a Harvest Hosts location because we wanted to test our solar setup and see if boondocking might be something we’d enjoy.
While the stay itself is technically “free,” the expectation is that you’ll support the host by making a purchase—so sometimes it can be costly.

Our first stop was the Moonlite Drive-In in Abingdon, Virginia. Originally opened in 1949 it was packed with nostalgia and charm. The atmosphere was wonderful, and I can honestly say the popcorn was some of the saltiest I’ve had in years!

And remember that “free” overnight stay? Between movie tickets and concessions, Greg and I spent about $40. Good thing we didn’t bring kids. 😂
As for the movies... I couldn’t really tell you much about them. It had been raining, we had the windows open enjoying the cool air, and somewhere along the way both of us fell asleep. We woke up halfway through the movie wondering what we’d missed.

Overall, it was a fun experience and I’m glad we tried it. But if I’m being honest, I think I prefer campgrounds where I have all the amenities at my fingertips. Some might call me spoiled—and they’d probably be right.
That’s the beauty of RV life, though. There’s no right or wrong way to do it. You get to choose the adventure that works best for you.

🚐 Travel Day Is Finally Here!

“After months of planning, downsizing, and dreaming… can you guess where our first stop is?”

After three months of preparing, today is the day—we’re officially hitting the road!

Back in March, we sold our house and moved into our 46’ Brinkley. Since then, we’ve sold, donated, and given away more belongings than I care to admit… and somehow we still have a storage unit full of things we’ll figure out “one day.” 😄

But for now, the focus is on the adventure ahead.

Our first destination is Washington, D.C. Neither of us has ever visited before, so we’re excited to explore the area and see as much as possible. If you’ve been there, what would you consider a must-see for first-time visitors?

Even though we’ve lived the RV lifestyle before, this chapter feels a little different. Our rig is new, and today will be our very first time towing it. When we purchased it back in March, we had it delivered because we didn’t yet have a tow vehicle. So today is a big day, and we’re praying for smooth travels and no surprises along the way.

One thing that hasn’t changed is our travel style. We aren’t the type to drive all day and half the night just to reach a destination. We prefer to keep our travel days around 200 miles or so and be parked by early afternoon. For us, the journey is just as important as the destination.

Tonight we’ll be staying at our very first Harvest Hosts location in Virginia, and it will also be our first-ever boondocking experience. Somehow, during all our previous years of RVing, we never tried either one!

During our 2nd year we traded our Gateway for a Montana. We never gave this one a name, but she provided us with what we needed at the stage of life we were in. This pic was the last pic we took of her as this was the day we sold her and ended our full-time journey. That was in 2020.

We are counting down the days (30 to be exact) to when we get to pull out with our Brinkley and head north as we pick back up on our trip we abandoned in 2016 when Greg had a medical emergency. To all you ladies reading this today...a piece of advice....learn to pull your rigs. I wish I had back in 2016 as we were stranded for 8 weeks before Greg could drive again. Things will be different this go round.

When we first started full-time life back in March 2015, we started off with a Gateway fifth wheel that we named "Homer." That RV took us on our adventures through 17 states. We traded up after the first year to get more storage space. A decision I have never regretted.

Another lighthouse we went to in 2016 while in Massachusetts was Nauset Light, officially Nauset Beach Light. It is a restored lighthouse on the Cape Cod National Seashore near Eastham, Massachusetts, erected in 1923 using the 1877 tower that was moved here from the Chatham Light. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

While on the east coast in 2016 we were in Massachusetts and lighthouses were on the agenda. The Highland Light is an active lighthouse on the Cape Cod National Seashore in North Truro, Massachusetts. The current tower was erected in 1857, replacing two earlier towers that had been built in 1797 and 1831. It is the oldest and tallest lighthouse on Cape Cod.
