So are still so many great engineers in obscurity who's names should be household names based on the scale of their career and contributions. Dr. Gladys West is one of these people. Her work on mathematical modeling of the shape of the Earth enabled the GPS network the world uses for navigation.

Gladys Mae West grew up with a desire to succeed in life. During her 42-year career Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division was part of the team that ...

One very famous 'human' computer was Edith Clarke , who in addition to being the first professional female electrical engineer in the United States, invented and patented a device called The Clarke Calculator for solving complex infinite series equations involving capacity and inductance in long distance transmission lines for electricity.

Clarke wasn’t satisfied with using error prone assumptions about the characteristics of power lines over 50 miles, however performing the mathematical gymnastics to properly investigate was hard work and extremely time consuming. Her solution was a mechanical slide calculator an engineer could employ to obtain acceptably accurate results in a simplified manner thus avoiding the laborious task of performing such calculations by hand.

Perhaps her most famous quote: "There is no demand for women engineers, as such, as there are for women doctors; but there's always a demand for anyone who can do a good piece of work." -EC

Computer super hero, Konrad Zuse was born June 22nd 1910. He was a German civil engineer & inventor. His greatest achievement was the world's first functional program-controlled Turing-complete computer called the Z3 which became operational in May 1941. The Z3 computer did not survive the war, but his next machine the Z4 became one of the world's first commercial digital computer systems and was notable for its reliability. Zuse was also a brilliant pioneer in the development of computer programming languages.

a tale of off and on

Just two symbols- “1” and “0” are the binary digits or ‘b-its’ for short that are the basis for all computer data. Everything we experience on a computer from words & numbers to audio, video & virtual reality is stored as a simple string of bits. Thank millions of tiny transistors (pictured above) for storing and remembering it all for us!
