The VAPB awarded two $2000 scholarships to students majoring in media and broadcast journalism: Morgan Norris of Hampton University and Claudia Di Lima of West Virginia University.

Mark Spain, longtime anchor of WSET-TV in Lynchburg, Va., was honored posthumously with The Associated Press Robert Gallimore Distinguished Service Award on April 5 at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. Spain, who spent a decade at the Lynchburg station and more than 40 in the journalism business, died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 64 last December. His wife, Lynita Spain, accepted the award in his honor.

This year's West Virginia Lifetime Achievement Award is awarded to Randy Yohe, the Marshall/Huntington bureau chief for West Virginia Public Broadcasting. Yohe began his career 37 years ago at WSAZ-TV in Charleston, W.Va.

Congratulations to all the winners who were recognized at the Virginias Associated Press Broadcasters Awards!

The awards were announced April 5 at the annual Awards Luncheon and General Membership Meeting held at Greenbrier Resort. Thirty-four news organizations in Virginia and West Virginia submitted 611 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports from 2024.

Mark Spain, longtime anchor of WSET-TV in Lynchburg, Va., was honored posthumously with The Associated Press Robert Gallimore Distinguished Service Award. Spain, who spent a decade at the Lynchburg station and more than 40 in the journalism business, died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 64 last December.

The West Virginia Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Randy Yohe, the Marshall/Huntington bureau chief for West Virginia Public Broadcasting. Yohe began his career 37 years ago at WSAZ-TV in Charleston, W.Va.

2025 VAPB Awards Luncheon-HOTEL DEADLINE!

Don’t forget to reserve your room at The Greenbrier before the group rate expires on March 4

The 2025 Virginias Associated Press Broadcasters Awards Luncheon at The Greenbrier Resort is Saturday, Apr. 5. This year's event honors the best work of 2024 and is open to Virginia and West Virginia broadcasters, their spouses and friends, to professionals employed in associated fields and to college students. All the winners will be revealed at the annual luncheon and awards presentation that begins at 12 p.m. Ticket prices begin at $50.

The deadline to register for the luncheon is Friday, Mar. 28, 2025. But the deadline to reserve a room at the hotel is Tuesday, Mar. 4.

HOTEL ROOMS: If you'd like to stay overnight, The Greenbrier Resort, 101 W. Main St., White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., has rooms available on Friday and/or Saturday night at the group rate of $275 per night + taxes/fees.

Call the hotel directly at 888-558-6601, Option #2 to book a room (Option #1 to book activities). Please make sure you mention our group -- the Virginias Associated Press Broadcasters -- to get the special rate for April 4 and/or April 5. Please be advised that the room block sells out quickly. Reservations require a deposit equal to one night's room and tax. This deposit is fully refundable up until March 4.
