Giant fish are jumpin’
Gulf sturgeon are back in north Florida rivers and they are jumping! Boaters and sturgeon use the rivers at the same time and injuries have occurred, so please be cautious. Go slow, wear your life jacket and keep people off the bow of the boat to reduce the risk of impact and allow for more reaction time if a jumping sturgeon is encountered. This Federally Threatened species can reach up to 8 feet long and weigh more than 100 pounds. In the Suwannee River, the average length of the sturgeon is 5 feet.

Why do they jump? Experts think sturgeon jump out of the water to communicate with other fish and to gulp air to fill their swim bladders.

Gulf sturgeon are present in the Suwannee River as well as most other rivers in northwest Florida, including the Apalachicola, Choctawhatchee, Yellow, Blackwater and Escambia: http://bit.ly/2wcVAMC
