Jeff Villwock, one of my best friends and mentors, died of cancer in February of 2020 at the age of 54. Jeff was one of the best bass players I've ever heard. His lines were always melodic and active, always tying the drums to the harmonic and melodic elements of the songs while never getting in the way or detracting from leads or vocals.
When I was 17 and Jeff was 27 we played in the first band I was in that played out - Lazy Vegas. A few years later Jeff asked me to join up with him and some amazing musicians from the Milwaukee music scene to form Highball Holiday. Despite never having listened to ska before, Jeff was very guiding and encouraging. It's from that band I developed my taste in roots ska and reggae.
After Highball Holiday had about run its course, Jeff was interested in starting something new, but this time he wanted to try playing guitar. He suggested that I play bass and he'd help me develop my bass playing. In the format of a drums, bass, guitar Jeff and I had 3 distinct bands all with totally different playing styles and concepts. The three bands were P***o, Bloom and Burly. In each of these bands Jeff mentored me and my bass playing focusing on three different styles - from picked, active, melodic 8th note lines in P***o to tuned down root note, Sabbath esque lines of Burly to finger style quarter note lines in Bloom.
When Jeff passed away I was wondering about his bass, because he meant so much to me both as a bass mentor and best friend. At the time, I didn't want to bother his family about anything, so I let it go. But this summer, I was thinking about Jeff again and contacted his brother Mike to ask what happened to the bass.
Turns out before Jeff passed, he, his mom and Mike were talking about it and Jeff said he felt like I would be a good person to end up with it.
Yesterday I went and met up with Mike and Jeff's mom and they gifted the Jeff's bass to me - a Rickenbacker 4003 that Jeff bought new in the 80's. We sat for a long time and had a great talk remembering Jeff and all the bands he was in.
I am so thankful to be in possession of this bass. I am looking forward to using it on new recordings.
