How To Start Beekeeping 🐝 Part 3

Choosing equipment. Before you begin beekeeping you need to decide what style of hive you want to use.

Which method of beekeeping are you going to use? Conventional beekeeping? Natural beekeeping?

Vertical hives or horizontal hives?

Are you going to purchase hives or build hives?

Can you lift heavy honey supers (50-60lbs), or would you rather lift a couple of frames at a time?

Will you be trapping swarms? The hive and swarm trap should be the same style.

Which horizontal hive do you use? And why?

How to Start Beekeeping 🐝 Part 2

Find a Mentor. Specifically, find a mentor that manages bees the way you want to manage bees.

This is important because you want to be able to ask questions that are pertinent to the way you keep bees. Asking a beekeeper questions about horizontal hives when he uses vertical hives may not get you the answers you need. Asking a beekeeper about how much honey to leave throughout the year when she feeds sugar water may leave you frustrated. Asking a beekeeper about varroa mites treatments when they don't treat bees will leave you searching elsewhere.

You may end up with several mentors who have gone before you and from whom you can glean information. Every bit of information you learn can be helpful.

Adam and I started the BK Bee Club as a way to help those who want to manage bees naturally. We have people in our club from all over the country. It has been fun to connect with others who are on the same path.

How To Start Beekeeping 🐝 Part 1

Totally get it! You want to start now and have a bunch of questions, or you don't know where to start. Here is what you can do to prepare before getting the bees.

Educate yourself! Even a bit of information will help you decide which beekeeping method to use.

1. Read a book. We have a good book out to get you started! The Bee Kept book is about how we started beekeeping and where we are today.

2. Watch videos. Seeing someone with the bees is helpful.

3. Listen to Podcasts. Check out the "Listen" highlight.

4. Take a class. Hands-on classes are a great way to become more confident with the bees.

5. Join a club. We are encourage everyone to join a bee club. Beekeeping is local and you will learn tips for your area.

It takes time to learn beekeeping. We can help you!
