THIS SATURDAY ANOTHER LOCAL NO KINGS RALLY
NEWS RELEASE FROM PIEDMONT PERSISTERS & CULPEPER DEMS

Culpeper–"On October 18, local Piedmont region residents will come together with millions of Americans across the country in a nationwide day of nonviolent rallies at the second No Kings Day of Action. There are currently thousands of events nationwide.

"The local No Kings rally will be held from 10 am to noon at two locations in Culpeper: sidewalk in front of Walmart on James Madison Highway and sidewalk in front of the Culpeper County Democratic Committee on South Main Street. The demonstration is co-sponsored by the Piedmont Persisters (a chapter of Indivisible) and the Culpeper County Democratic Committee.

From Erin Restel & Marysa Mullen, co-chairs of the Piedmont Persisters Indivisible group: “We are happy to partner with Americans everywhere to stand up against the hateful, authoritarian actions of the current administration. We are excited to show that contrary to popular belief, rural residents are not in favor of extremism and hatred.

From Mary Jo Monahan, chair of the Culpeper County Democratic Committee: “Please join us as we peacefully stand together for a national day of action against the Trump administration as they push the limits of executive power in direct conflict with our Constitution."

"On June 14, more than 5 million people across all 50 states joined No Kings in the largest single-day rally yet against President Trump’s authoritarianism, with over 600 people at the Culpeper event. The October 18 day of action is the next step in this growing movement, channeling that energy into yet another coordinated, peaceful mobilization.

"We’re excited to join with other groups organizing the No Kings peaceful rallies across the country including ACLU, American Federation of Teachers, Common Defense, 50501, Human Rights Campaign, Indivisible, League of Conservation Voters, MoveOn, National Nurses United, Public Citizen, SEIU, among others. A full list of partners can be seen at www.nokings.org/partners.
For a full list of participating cities, event details, and national spokespeople available for interviews, visit www.NoKings.org or contact [email protected].

"All No Kings events adhere to a shared commitment to nonviolent rallies and community safety. Organizers are trained in de-escalation and are working closely with local partners and law enforcement to ensure peaceful and powerful actions nationwide.

"Note: Indivisible is a movement driven by a vision of a real democracy of, by, and for the people. The Indivisible movement is a network of thousands of local groups and millions of activists across every state working to build an inclusive democracy by fighting for bold, progressive policies and creating lasting grassroots power."

As the president escalates his authoritarian power grab, the NO KINGS non-violent movement continues to rise stronger. We are united once again to remind the world: America has No Kings and the power belongs to the people.

SMALL FARM OUTREACH CONFERENCE THIS WEEK IN NORFOLK

Virginia Cooperative Extension Small Farm Outreach Program at Virginia State University will host the annual Small Farm Outreach Conference at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott in Norfolk from Thursday, October 16 – Friday October 17.

This year, VSU is partnering with the Minority Landowners Magazine in honor of their 20th anniversary to host guest speakers and provide educational tours and break-out sessions for farmers, ranchers, and rural and urban landowners alike to network and gain practical skills and knowledge designed to help grow their farming enterprises.

The SFOP provides outreach and learning opportunities to small and innovative farmers for production management, financial and risk management, marketing, USDA assistance programs and more. The conference is an opportunity to hear about available resources, smart business strategies, and successful production practices – especially for those new to farming who want to learn more about what it takes to farm profitably and sustainably.

At this year’s conference, participants will hear from guest speakers, attend networking and break-out sessions and have opportunities to interface with representatives from 14 different sponsors as well as the USDA and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. On Thursday, October 16, the conference will begin at 11:30 am and conclude at 8:00 pm. On Friday, October 17, a full day of activities will begin at 7:00 am and conclude at 8:00 pm. An exciting lineup of guest speakers will share their expertise across different areas of agriculture, including:
Legacy production
Heirs property
How to market farms and farm products
How to add value to farm products

Four bus tours will take participants to observe successful practices in action at different urban farms, including an urban tree farm, in the Tidewater area. This year’s conference will celebrate 15 small farmers who are graduating as the first cohort of the Beginning Farmers and Rancher Program. Then, the second cohort of this program will kick off. To conclude the conference, winners of the following awards will be announced:
Small Farmer of the Year
Program Assistant of the Year

“We’re looking forward to hosting not only small farmers in Virginia, but small farmers from all over the country who will be joining us,” says VSU’s Small Farm Outreach Program Director William Crutchfield. “Whether you’re a rural farmer, urban farmer or anything in between, there’s something you can gain or learn from attending the Small Farm Outreach Program conference in collaboration with the Minority Landowners Magazine.”
Registration is free and includes meals listed on the agenda. You can register for the conference by visiting https://www.ext.vsu.edu/events, selecting the “SFOP Small Farm Conference” then clicking “Register Now.”

If you are a person with a disability and desire any assistive devices, services or other accommodations to participate in this activity, please contact the Small Farm Outreach Program office at [email protected] or call (804) 524-3292 / TDD (800) 828-1120 during business hours of 8 am. and 5 p.m. to discuss accommodations five days prior to the event.

VETERANS DAY FUNDRAISER AND EXCERPTS FROM "THE KID WHO GREW UP IN BROOKLYN"

The Annual Veterans Day fabulous event in a beautiful venue for a worthy cause is organized by Culpeper resident Lou Realmuto, author of recently released, "The Kid Who Grew Up in Brooklyn: The Early Years," covering his childhood 1945-1963 in Flatbush.

Check out an upcoming article on the new self-published book, not a memoir, he says, that offers reflections on life and Realmuto's childhood in the NY borough that also includes Coney Island, where he had to grow up fast and had free range. All profits from the book will go to Fisher House Foundation, a nonprofit that houses and supports the families of veterans in the hospital.

Here are some excerpts from the book, now available online:

"I've always felt very fortunate to have grown up as I refer to often, 'Back in the Day,' and even more so now as back then life seemed so much simpler. With all the turmoil going on throughout the world today and so many out-of-control events surrounding life nowadays, I find it both very comforting and even therapeutic at times for me to just occasionally sit down and look back on and share some of the many memories of my early life."

Realmuto writes, "To a great degree we did live a very sheltered life back then ... in our little world called 'the neighborhood.' Our parents were also there, I guess, too consumed with their lives and in their own little bubble. Even if they did have some idea or actually knew what was really happening in the rest of the country or on the rest of the world stage, it wasn't share or discussed in our presence. ... When I was growing up, I don't remember my parents or relatives ever discussing politics or current events."

"We lived in the first-floor apartment at 1580 East 29th St. between Kings Highway and Avenue P ... It was an attached two-family house built in 1930 in the predominantly Jewish, some Irish and some Italian neighborhood. "

RELEASE FROM UVA HEALTH
MOBILE CARE UNIT COMING TO GREENE

"To help residents of Greene County and surrounding areas access primary care more easily, UVA Health’s mobile care unit will make monthly visits to Stanardsville beginning Oct. 21.

"Patients will be seen from 2-6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month at the Greene County Senior Center at 222 Main St.

“We have heard from many residents across Greene County asking for primary care services closer to where they live,” said Novella Thompson, administrator for UVA Health’s Population Health Department. “Our mobile care unit can create access, make it more convenient for patients to get the care they need, and reduce their travel times.”

"The mobile care unit can help residents in several ways:

If they would like to be seen for a non-emergency situation and cannot wait for a visit with their regular care provider.
If they don’t have a regular care provider, the mobile care unit team can provide an initial consultation and then help them establish care at a UVA Health brick-and-mortar outpatient clinic.
If they do not wish to establish care at an outpatient clinic, the unit can serve as their primary care provider.

Available Services
Care available from UVA Health providers includes:

general health checkups
chronic disease management
care for children
care for minor illnesses and injuries
women’s health
lab tests

Making an Appointment
Patients may make appointments by calling 434.297.7800; walk-in visits are also welcome.

The mobile care unit also makes regular visits to the Fifeville and Southwood neighborhoods along with Yancey School Community Center in Esmont. Services are scheduled to be expanded in March 2026 to Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall. For more information, visit UVA Health’s mobile care website."
