LA GUÁNTANAMERA - The best-known Cuban popular song in the world has a very interesting history. The current consensus is that the original version was composed in 1929 by Joseito Fernández, who recorded the first version in the 1930s with lyrics that feature a betrayed love. A few decades later, Julián Orbón adapted four stanzas of José Martí's Simple Verses to the melody, and that version became the official one. In the 1960s it was popularized in America and beyond by Pete Seeger. Some believe that Herminio García Wilson deserves credit as co-composer of the original, an issue officially resolved in civil courts in favor of Joseito Fernández in 1993. The song is presented here with love in a unique interpretation, as a changüí with danceable flow.
