The entries are in and now it’s time to select the nominees for this year’s Imagen Awards. 🏆

And I’m honored to share that I’ve been asked to be a part of the small group of judges for this year’s nominations. Contenders include some of the most celebrated nominees and winners from this year’s Oscars and Golden Globes as well as last year’s Emmys. 🌟

Past honorees include: Andy García, Antonio Banderas, Edward James Olmos, Rita Moreno, Jennifer Lopez, Selena Gomez, and Héctor Elizondo.

Having been through the process of the Emmys nomination selection, it really blew my mind to see that the Imagen Awards have (in my opinion) much tougher criteria.

Fun fact:
The Imagen Foundation was co-founded by Norman Lear to shine a light on and celebrate Latino representation in the entertainment industry.

My very own line of greeting cards!
And I’m so excited!

THE INSPIRATION: One of my favorite things to do is give and get cards. ✉️ It’s one of the few things you get in the mail 📬 that can make your day. 🌞 And I really love writing a personal note so the lucky victim knows they were thought of. 🖌️

TRUE STORY: When I was in high school, hanging out in malls was our thing. And the way my friends and family found out I was there was by my laugh. I would go straight into the card store and read card after card—only the funny ones. And I would LOL without holding back. One day, my mom was shopping and didn’t know I was there…until she heard me laughing several stores down and said, “Oh, I guess my daughter’s here.” 😄

Sooo…one of my comedy mentor encouraged me to create cards and I ran with it. I’m finishing up the first set of designs and can’t wait to share! 💌

I used to do stand-up comedy in the 90’s (when the earth was formed) and learned from some of the best but it was all sorta on-the-job training. Still over the course of about 7 years, I had a pretty good run in comedy clubs, bars, and a few seedy back alleys. And had some great nights. Then I stopped and went back for a couple years, about 15-ish years ago (holy crap, it sounds like I’m 100).

Long story short—I always loved stand-up comedy and it’s been on my mind for years. I think it never left me. Then one day, one of my favorite comics, Cristela Alonzo, posted about her stand-up comedy coach and how she started with him and still works with him when she’s prepping for her Netflix specials, etc. That was it. That was my sign. I was sold. I signed up for his class shortly after and I can shamelessly admit that I’m in the cult and ready to drink the Kool-aid. This dude is a joke writing genius and excellent teacher.

If you want to do stand-up comedy, learn more, get better, or just learn some jokey joke writing, this is my cult leader, Dean Lewis. I mean “joke writing coach”. His info is on the flyer (email him).

It’s been over 30 years since I first started doing stand-up comedy and I’m starting from scratch and approaching it like a beginner. And it’s been one of the greatest experiences I’ve had.

As soon as I get my sh** together and book a gig at the best seedy back alley, I’ll let you guys know…
