Calvary Christian Academy Facing Financial Pressure.

Calvary Christian Academy in Cresaptown is facing financial pressure and could be forced to consider closing its doors by the end of the month. In a video posted to the school’s page on Thursday, the school noted the need to raise $55,000 in order to continue operations after October. Last year, conflict between leadership teams at Calvary Christian Academy and Calvary Baptist Church became public and ultimately resulted in longtime school administrator Dan Thompson resigning his position. Thompson went on to help found Messiah Christian Academy, in Mineral County, WV.

Bishop Walsh Hosting “Light Up the Night” on Oct. 26th.

Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland is sponsoring a “Light Up the Night” Breast Cancer Walk on Sunday, October 26th at 6:30 pm. The walk is an opportunity to honor and support everyone whose lives have been touched by breast cancer. October is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pennsylvania On Month Four Without Budget.

Counties in the state of Pennsylvania are beginning to feel the pain of the state being unable to pass a budget. Legislators should have passed a budget by June 30th, but partisan squabbles have delayed an agreement. Counties across the Commonwealth are struggling to find ways to continue programs that have traditionally been funded by the state. County governments and other organizations have had to tap reserves or get loans to keep programs going.

Master Deputy Recognized.

Master Deputy Jenna Wilt-Harvey received the 2025 Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services award for Police Instructor of the year. Employed by the Garrett County Sheriff’s office, Master Deputy Wilt-Harvey has developed and implemented a continual and evolving defensive tactics program for use on patrol or working inside the detention center. The program is used by Garrett County deputies and correctional officers.

Governor Appoints Gregory Watt to West Virginia House of Delegates.

Governor Patrick Morrisey announced the appointment of Gregory A. Watt of Hacker Valley to represent the 48th District in the West Virginia House of Delegates. Watt is a retired U.S. Army officer with 28 years of active duty service and more than 16 years in defense contracting and program management. He currently serves as Director of Programmatic Solutions Architecture for JANUS Research Group, where he supports military modernization and technology integration. He has held senior roles supporting the U.S. Army Futures Command, TRADOC, and other national defense priorities. “Greg Watt is a battle-tested leader who understands service, sacrifice, and getting things done,” said Governor Morrisey. “His deep experience in national defense, organizational leadership, and strategic planning will bring valuable perspective to the Legislature and serve the citizens of the 48th District well.” He holds an MBA from Webster University and a BBA from State University of New York at Fredonia, and he completed advanced military education through the Joint Forces Staff College and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

Great Allegany Run and 5K today.

Beginning at 8 AM to 11 AM, the Great Allegany Run and 5K, sponsored by the Queen City Striders and Allegany County Habitat for Humanity, will take place in Cumberland today.

The 5K race will begin on Harrison Street, turning right onto Centre Street, then right onto Frederick Street, continuing through the downtown shopping center parking lot, and proceeding onto Queen City Drive. Runners will then turn right onto Mechanic Street and continue to a turnaround point near Southern States. After reaching the turnaround, participants will retrace their steps along the same route to return.

Great Allegany Run Route Runners participating in the Great Allegany Run will enter Cumberland via The Narrows (Route 36), continue south on Mechanic Street, and turn left onto Queen City Drive. They will proceed along Queen City Drive and turn onto Harrison Street, finishing at the Lila Building on Centre Street.

During both events, traffic will be temporarily halted along the race routes and all intersecting roads as runners pass through the area. Route 40 (leaving the city) will be closed to outbound traffic from 8 AM to 11 AM. Residents and motorists in Cumberland should expect travel delays and are encouraged to plan accordingly.

Family Fun on Pumpkin Patch Train.

Temperatures are dropping, leaves are falling and those orange pumpkins are beginning to show up throughout the community which means the Pumpkin Patch express is on the rails. Wes Heinz, Executive Director of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad spoke with WCBC News about the Pumpkin Patch train and how tickets for the train have been lowered this year to encourage local families to climb aboard…

"You know they may struggle for different reasons throughout the year. We've changed our prices to reflect that. We actually dropped the prices this year so, we can encourage more families to come out but, you know make a day of it. Come out to the Pumpkin Patch, ride train and then experience Baltimore Street, experience everything that's down there around Canal Place. We have so many great things to do in Cumberland and that the railroad gets a server the catalyst for families coming into the Allegany County region area."

Local History of the Fort Hill Rifle and Pistol club.

WCBC radio has opened its microphones to a bit of local history as we celebrate our 50th anniversary. A call on Thursday to WCBC's Dave Norman program highlighted the Fort Hill Rifle and Pistol club which was established in 1944. The organization has 500 members and was originally created to guard certain local areas during World War II…

“It was a group of men that were actually like part of a militia during the Second World War that guarded the railroad hub in our area and different federal buildings, and then after the war was over, they enjoyed shooting at the armory so much they wanted to have a place to shoot at of their own.”

Governor Speaking At ARC Conference Monday.

The fall conference of the Appalachian Regional Commission takes place Monday and Tuesday at Frostburg State University. Governor Wes Moore, along with ARC Chair Gayle Manchin, and Rebecca Flora of the Maryland Department of Planning will be the main speakers at the conference opening on Monday. This year’s theme for the conference is Appalachian Places: Growing Local Economies. The conference will highlight connections between Appalachia’s culture and geography and how they drive economic opportunity.
