INTRODUCING SEPTEMBER 2025...

Finally!

"What do the subjects of food and fashion have in common?
It’s not a quick response, is it? It’s not a question you get asked every single day and so you probably haven’t given it much thought. Oh, but ask a man how often he thinks about the Roman Empire and I bet he has an answer!

Fashion and food don’t always go hand in hand. One would not think these two would make a great pairing. After all, when is the last time you saw Heidi Klum walk the runway clutching a chili dog? In fact, I would venture to say the only place where “Food and Fashion” seem to team up flawlessly and seamlessly is inside this edition of Allegany Magazine.

Like so many other ideas that people may say 'that’ll never work' to here in region (and then those ideas end up having tremendous success) we couldn’t make up our minds which subject should have our attention this month – Fashion or Food – and so we chose both. This must be how Milton Hershey felt when he first decided to blend chocolate and peanut butter!

In this issue, you will find delicious recipes solicited from some of your favorite local culinary experts – folks like Andrew Ellifritz, David Fox, Todd Hall, William Hand, Leona McTaggart-Chapman, Shawn Weir, Kiya Wilhelm, and Jessie Woods. You are going to get suggestions for cocktails, entrees, and desserts!

Plus, Becky McClarran takes us behind the scenes for a little sip of the Whiskey Rebellion Festival happening later this month.

As far as fashions, we asked our photo correspondents to send us some of their latest pictorials – selections that scream style and what’s coming up in wearable art. And we heard from Cathy Heffner, C. Brooke Long, Karen Morgan, and J. Steven Smiley. They are taking us into some of our best boutiques with some beautiful results. Your wardrobe is in for a real makeover. We are going to show you some hot looks for “back to school” and beyond and even let you know where you can get the clothes right here at home.

Historian and humor writer, Andrew Sparber takes an amusing look at how a classic black and white TV show may have shaped his childhood, we have details on how Frostburg State came in seventh in a new nationwide poll, and we are giving you your first look at how to cast your ballot for the 2026 Best of Allegany awards.

When we first decided to do a “Food and Fashion” edition for September, even I thought the two topics would make for an awkward shared theme. But as we started to put the stories together and as the design and “look” of this edition came together, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly it all segued from one topic to the other. It was as smooth as silk…or a fresh jar of Skippy … depending on what subject in this issue you read about first.

Now…if you’ll excuse me, all of this talk about food and fashion has made me hungry…and I have this weird sudden urge to put on an apron and make a chili dog!

The staff of Allegany Magazine is shocked and sad to learn of the sudden passing of our good friend and photo correspondent, Matt Borror.

We first featured Matt as one of our 35 Under 35s in 2016. We later also spotlighted his band, The Hounded, when the group issued its first album release.

Matt later joined our team as a contributing photographer and even shot the cover of our Health and Wellness issue in April 2022. He most recently took on assignments for us for our Best of Allegany and Women in Business editions and he was on call as a photographer for this year's Most Fascinating People issue.

Over the years he also covered DelFest, the Tri State Wing Off Festival, the Battle of the Bands, Heritage Days, and the Allegany County Fair for us.

Matt, we will miss your talent, your personality, your smile, your humor, your tenacity, your spirit, your willingness to take on every assignment we handed you, your beautiful photography, your incredible music, and most of all - your friendship.

Rest in peace, friend.

Have a memorable moment? A cookie recipe you're always asked to share? We'd love to give it a publishing home.

Readers are asked to submit their holiday themed photos, stories, poems and recipes -- with as much written detail included as possible (please include the name of the photographer if it’s not you) to [email protected] In the subject line, write AM Holidays.
