ALLEGANY MAGAZINE CELEBRATES PRIDE

A Big Fan of the ‘Let Them’ Theory

"I was born and raised here with my roots dug deep, following many generations. Life has been a beautiful learning lesson by giving me a better perspective on why life happens the way it does.

I knew what I liked at a very young age. The first person I came out to happened to be my best friend at the time, until soon enough I realized, everyone else found out because she told someone that told everyone. Which lead to me being more uncomfortable with myself. Even though it does but doesn’t seem so long ago, the early 2000’s was a different time. I felt as if I had to hide who I truly was because I hadn’t accepted myself fully yet. It took until the past couple years to fully embrace myself and be myself unashamedly but respectfully."

In our June edition -- Elizabeth Kinsall submits a personal story on coming out, getting sober, and moving on. It's an inspiring story of acceptance and gratitude.

ALLEGANY MAGAZINE CELEBRATES PRIDE

Bea-Coming
A Journey Through Identity, Expression, and Resilience

"Raised in a religious household, I was lucky to have a family who, while holding firm beliefs, allowed me space to explore my identity. I gravitated toward 'boy clothing' and immersed myself in sports that were considered male-dominated. It wasn’t always easy, but I had room to breathe, to question, and to begin forming the earliest pieces of who I would become.

In my early adulthood, I followed a path I thought was expected of me. I married a man and had three children young. I deeply love my kids, but I eventually came to realize that a heteronormative lifestyle was detrimental to my well-being. Over the years, I slowly peeled back the layers of who I was, exploring self-expression in a more authentic way.

My story is about more than just survival—it’s about transformation, tenacity, and the ongoing journey of becoming. I’ve learned that you don’t have to fit into anyone’s mold to live a full, radiant life. You just have to be brave enough to be yourself."

In our June edition -- Beatrix LaFay reflects on identity, self expression and the importance of awareness and respect - not just during the month of June but all year.

BROWNIE POINTS

It's the book of a photographer's lifestyle.

Would you believe us if we told you that one of the nation's foremost celebrity photographers grew up on Third Street in Lavale? And that over the last nearly 50 years, he has photographed everyone from Miles Davis to Stephen King to JFK Jr. to the cast of the newest Scream movie being currently filmed?

Meet Brownie Harris.

"It’s been exciting, exhausting, fun, stressful, intriguing, a lot of anxiety and humbling," Brownie tells us in our latest printed issue. "I hope that other photographers and artists find the urge to create their own book and leave a lasting legacy. Also, if you have a mind to it you can do anything. In the end when I saw the finished book proof I realized how much I had accomplished. So many times in my life I thought I would never work again. So common in the freelance life thinking you are unemployed until the next job."

Get a look inside his new collectible coffee table book, full of memories and photos of the famous faces he has captured on film during his career behind the lens and find out how his last trip "home to Cumberland" may have been the inspiration he needed to get the book launched.

The story is in our June issue -- available everywhere now -- and yes, the story does include some of Brownie's most famous images.

LEGENDS NEVER DIE

It will be 39 years this month that American guitar legend and Cumberland native Joe Maphis died. And for nearly 40 years, his story and his influence on the music industry has been left untold. Shockingly, no other biographer had penned the definitive story of the man who toured with Patsy Cline, a man who provided music for movies that need a Southern flair sound, a man who discovered a television sweetheart when she was only eleven, and a man who was eventually interred in the Cash family cemetery plot.

Until now.

“I am very surprised no one has written another biography about Joe before now and I was surprised when I set off to do my book,” says Greg Larry, author of King of the Strings, a new work detailing the legend, legacy and life of Otis Wilson Maphis – known as simply “Joe” to fans and loved ones alike. “And so many people were willing to talk to me about Joe and his influence.”

Get inside Greg's new book, King of the Strings, and learn how a guitar player from Allegany County went on to have an absolutely profound impact on the country music industry. From humble beginnings to the Country Music Hall of Fame.

This is an inspirational story you won't want to miss.

And it's in our June edition -- available everywhere right now.

NO PIPER NO!

Have you finished watching the latest season finale of the hit streaming show White Lotus?

While we won't spoil the finale, in our printed June edition, Allegany Magazine has unearthed an interesting treasure of trivia to share about this season’s connection to Mountain Maryland.

Spoiler alert: It’s not Lorazepam!

Did you know one of the breakout stars this season has a family connection to Allegany County?

And it’s Saxon Ratcliffe himself!

That's right, actor Patrick Schwarzenegger is not only the Terminator's son and also related to the Kennedys, but one side of his family tree (no, not the poisonous Cerbera Odollams) has strong roots in Cumberland.

From all of us at Allegany Magazine, Happy Juneteenth.

In our printed June issue, correspondent Shana Oshiro has some thoughts on what fuels the holiday and why it is especially important to observe in 2025 and why Juneteenth goes beyond the sixth month of the year.

"Immigration. There is much talk about it. It’s a 'hot topic' in current events, reported with fervor on the news – as if floods of migrant workers are coming into the county in an effort to stage a revolution and overthrow the government. Immigrants are viewed as the 'boogey man' who wants to steal your job and keep you from buying your dream house. But would you believe me if I told you this concept is nothing new in our nation’s history?

Immigration has been used a political tool and lightning rod and a scare tactic since our nation’s infancy.

And in this month where we recognize Juneteenth and at a time when immigration is being discussed as if this is some new cultural wave, it’s important to note that it is just history – particularly white history – repeating itself.

It is also important to note that 'immigration' as a political tool is almost always rooted in racism. Racism as a tool for division and conquering of course was directed not only to dehumanize enslaved Africans and indigenous people of the land, but also to divide people of other 'non-white' ethnicities from one another and from 'whitened' Americans, according to political expedience. "

Allegany Magazine observes Juneteenth

In our printed edition, we offer a look back at a most historical time and a most remarkable woman. Jane Gates.

We visit her house on Greene Street in Cumberland and learn her remarkable connection to local history. And we find out how a former slave and launderess ended up being the inspiration for a national television series.

Allegany Magazine correspondent Becky McClarran has the complete story in our new issue -- available everywhere now. Pick up a copy today and be inspired!
