EDITED: The crash that killed Zachary Steele is a tragedy for his family, friends and our community. Our goal in publishing this story is to give Forsyth County residents a clear, factual account of what has happened, how local agencies have responded and what steps are still ahead in the legal process. Our goal is transparency and accountability paired with empathy. We regret that this post missed the mark on the latter.

News stories are often difficult to read and to report, and we knew this one would be hard from the moment we reached out to Zach’s family after the crash first happened. At the same time, we knew telling Zach’s story was important for our community. That is why in addition to writing about who he was in previous reporting, we also asked questions of law enforcement and pursued records that would provide a more complete picture of what happened. We will continue following this case as the investigation continues, and we appreciate the community’s feedback as we work to responsibly share those stories.
